ASNL77 Posted March 12, 2005 Report Posted March 12, 2005 I have the chance to buy this set but I can't find any thread on it. Could you tell me what you think of it? Quote
GA Russell Posted March 12, 2005 Report Posted March 12, 2005 I think it's terrific. It also includes a side of tentet recordings with their arrangements. And it includes the album the quartet did with Lee Konitz to make up a quintet. Buy it! Quote
Daniel Andresen Posted March 12, 2005 Report Posted March 12, 2005 I have a very large Chet Baker collection, but "neglected" to buy this set because all the music on this set can be found elsewhere. The music is GREAT though... and if the price is right... Quote
B. Goren. Posted March 13, 2005 Report Posted March 13, 2005 I am not a Baker or Mulligan fan, but I like the music they played together. Quote
Free For All Posted March 13, 2005 Report Posted March 13, 2005 I *discovered* Mosaics too late to get this one while it was in print. I also have most of this material already, but I would have loved to have this box! I'd say GET IT (if the price is right)!! Quote
sidewinder Posted March 13, 2005 Report Posted March 13, 2005 I've got the set on LP - highly recommended. The first copy I saw about 10 or so years ago was in a 2nd hand shop, gathering dust in a box. It had some writing in the booklet and the box was not great so (not really knowing Mosaic at the time) I passed on the £15-£20 price of the set (which was probably negotiable) When I went back to that shop a couple of years later (thinking that the Mosaic might be there ) it had closed down. Regretted it ever since - it cost a bit more than that to pick up the subsequent copy . Quote
Aftab Posted March 13, 2005 Report Posted March 13, 2005 I have the PacJazz set that covers the same material - it's desert island stuff for me Quote
ASNL77 Posted March 13, 2005 Author Report Posted March 13, 2005 (edited) Thanks to you all. I will have to make some room on my shelves for this set. These will be my first Mulligan CDs. Edited March 13, 2005 by ASNL77 Quote
Dave James Posted March 13, 2005 Report Posted March 13, 2005 I don't know how anyone who's a jazz fan wouldn't enjoy this set. It's full of good music. Chet and Gerry when everything was still uncomplicated. The added attraction is that this is one of the earliest Mosaics, when they were still HQ'ed on Ocean Avenue in Santa Monica, California. The back of the booklet is green and the CD trays are arranged in that peculiar horizontal / vertical combination that characterized the label's earliest releases. Up over and out. Quote
king ubu Posted March 14, 2005 Report Posted March 14, 2005 Could someone post the discography of this and/or the PacJazz set(s)? I have the single CDs, but I think there was an Annie Ross date included (at least in the PacJazz set) that I never found (never even saw anywhere). ubu Quote
kinuta Posted March 14, 2005 Report Posted March 14, 2005 I also have all the material on different cds. It's great stuff and recommended of course. The Annie Ross one is called ' Annie Ross Sings A Song With Mulligan' on Pacific Jazz. I'll post the cat no. and details as soon as I can find it. Quote

MartyJazz Posted March 14, 2005 Report Posted March 14, 2005 (edited) Could someone post the discography of this and/or the PacJazz set(s)? I have the single CDs, but I think there was an Annie Ross date included (at least in the PacJazz set) that I never found (never even saw anywhere). ubu The Annie Ross-Mulligan-Baker (with Henry Grimes & Dave Bailey) material on the Pacific Jazz box set was recorded Dec 11 &/or 17, 1957: Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea This Time the Dream's On Me Let There be Love How About You I Guess I'll Have to Change My Plan This is Always (alt version) My Old Flame It Don't Mean a Thing.... (Baker out) The Lady's in Love with You (Baker out) I've Grown Accustomed to Your Face (alt ver, Baker out) You Turned the Tables on Me (Baker out) All of the above is also included on ANNIE ROSS SINGS A SONG OF MULLIGAN (Pacific Jazz CD B2-46852) The presence of "alternative versions" in the above list is explained by the fact that these tunes were also recorded (also in Dec '57 apparently) by a Mulligan group in which Art Farmer and Bill Crow replace Baker & Grimes. All this material is also on the Ross CD (but understandably NOT on the Mulligan-Baker Pac Jazz box set) as follows: I Feel Pretty I've Grown Accustomed to Your Face All of You Give Me the Simple Life This is Always My Old Flame Edited March 14, 2005 by MartyJazz Quote
king ubu Posted March 14, 2005 Report Posted March 14, 2005 Thanks Marty! I guess I need to find that CD... Nice cover, too: ubu Quote
