Rooster_Ties Posted March 12, 2005 Report Posted March 12, 2005 (edited) I'm really diggin' Woody Shaw's "Cassandranite" (a.k.a "In the Beginning...") this morning, which got me thinking... What are some of the more notable jazz "demo albums" (demo tapes, done in a studio, or pseudo-studio situation) that weren't released until years later??? Let's also include artists whose very first studio-session(s) -- as a leader -- went unreleased at the time, for whatever reason. What are some of the best?? Worst?? Discuss... Grant Green's first session on BN comes to mind, as does Bobby Hutcherson's. Both were unreleased until only very recently. Also, a side question: Anybody know what the cover to the original issue of "Cassandranite" looked like?? It was first issued in 1983 as "In the Beginning..." (I'm assuming on Muse). ghost of miles Posted March 12, 2005 Report Posted March 12, 2005 (edited) Tina Brooks' MINOR MOVE, which provoked much discussion as AOTW. Edited March 12, 2005 by ghost of miles Quote
Dmitry Posted March 12, 2005 Report Posted March 12, 2005 Joe Maneri - Paniots Nine Not intended as an album per se, but this is the first occurance of Maneri on record[correct me if I'm wrong] Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted March 12, 2005 Report Posted March 12, 2005 Grant's First Stand does not belong in this category - it was released very soon after recording. Quote
Big Wheel Posted March 12, 2005 Report Posted March 12, 2005 I think Rooster is confusing it with FIRST SESSION, with Wynton Kelly et al. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted March 12, 2005 Author Report Posted March 12, 2005 (edited) I think Rooster is confusing it with FIRST SESSION, with Wynton Kelly et al. Right you are. What the hell was Rooster thinking anyway??? He should fix the album cover in the first post in this thread. Edit: Looks like he just did. Edited March 13, 2005 by Rooster_Ties Quote
brownie Posted March 13, 2005 Report Posted March 13, 2005 Louis Smith BN album 'Here Comes Louis Smith' (with the original Buckshot La Funke) would be another. Quote

mjzee Posted March 15, 2005 Report Posted March 15, 2005 The Clifford Brown/Max Roach sides that came out on Mainstream. Those were fakes. ??? Pls elaborate. Sounded like Brown/Roach to me. Liner notes quoting Max, produced by Bob Shad, the whole nine yards. Were they just outtakes from other sessions? Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted March 15, 2005 Report Posted March 15, 2005 Yes, the Mainstream Brown/Roach stuff consisted of "leftovers" from Emarcy sessions Shad produced. That stuff is included in the Emarcy Brownie box. Quote
