montg Posted March 12, 2005 Report Posted March 12, 2005 I'm sure they differ in a lot of ways, some more subtle than others, but I'm mostly too ignorant to pick up on these differences. Mostly, what I hear is that Hubbard is a little more harmonically 'free' and also a little more sloppy (or creative, depending on your opinion) in articulation. I'm curious to learn how others perceive or discriminate between FH and LM. Quote
scottb Posted March 12, 2005 Report Posted March 12, 2005 I can usually differentiate the two because of Freddie's tone which is "warmer." The temperature analogy doesn't really hold because certainly Lee blows "hotter" than Freddie. But you know what I mean. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted March 12, 2005 Report Posted March 12, 2005 I always associate those really expressive, incredibly well-placed 'slurs' with Lee's playing. Maybe 'scoops' would be a more descriptive term (at least that's what vocalists would call them). Another description: hitting a pitch, by sliding up (or down) to it by a half-step, or at least a quarter-step away from the pitch. Maybe Freddie does some of this too - I hadn't really thought about it. But Lee does them in a way that seems so incredibly natural (IMHO), almost "conversational". I think Lee's solos often have a "story-telling" quality to them. Joe Henderson often had this knack as well. (As did Woody Shaw.) All subjective, to be sure. Your mileage may vary. Quote
ghost of miles Posted March 12, 2005 Report Posted March 12, 2005 Lee's dead and Freddie don't play no more! Quote
Dan Gould Posted March 12, 2005 Report Posted March 12, 2005 I hear Freddie as more "technical" and Lee as more "soulful". That and what Tom mentions, which I've also heard referred to as "smears" or "smearing notes." Definitely a Lee thing rather than a Hub thing. Quote
Soul Stream Posted March 12, 2005 Report Posted March 12, 2005 Other than they both play trumpet. Two completely different musical minds. However, BOTH very, very soulful. Just taking two different paths to get there many times. I don't buy the argument that Lee is bluesy and has soul and Freddie is technical and cold. I'm not buying. Both are beautiful. Quote

Jazz Kat Posted March 12, 2005 Report Posted March 12, 2005 This is a hard one. They both swing really hard. They were both prefect for Blakey's band. Quote
gslade Posted March 12, 2005 Report Posted March 12, 2005 Lee's dead and Freddie don't play no more! But at least we still have Wynton Thank goodness Quote
scottb Posted March 12, 2005 Report Posted March 12, 2005 I think later on there's a bigger difference and it's easier to tell but if your talking about them in The Jazz Messengers when Hubbard is playing more... well, like Lee, I think the nuances of Morgan playing a little "hotter" and his slurring are the biggest differences. Quote
Jazz Kat Posted March 14, 2005 Report Posted March 14, 2005 I know more about Lee musically then Freddie, so I prefer to listen to Lee. But I heard some good stuff from Hub. Hub Cap was great! Quote
brownie Posted March 14, 2005 Report Posted March 14, 2005 Just listen to 'The Night of the Cookers' that was reissued recently as a RVG and hear the differences. A number of people think the date was not successful but I have always enjoyed the Morgan/Hubbard confrontation there! Quote

Guest ariceffron Posted March 15, 2005 Report Posted March 15, 2005 FREDDIE MIGHT HAVE DONE MORE AVANTGARDE OR JOUNRNEYMAN TYPES OF DATES THAN LEE BUT THATS BECAUSE HE WAS NOT AS GOOD A BEBOP PLAYER AS LEE AND SO HE HAD TO PLAY ALL WHAKY. LEE IS THE BETTER OF THE 2 FOR SURE, BUT THEY ARE BOTH DAMN FUCKING GOOD MIND U. Quote
marcello Posted March 15, 2005 Report Posted March 15, 2005 Aric, Somedays you are such a source of Joy and Enlightenment, it boggles the mind and soul! Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted March 15, 2005 Report Posted March 15, 2005 Freddie expresses himself via technique and Lee expresses himself. Quote
Cornelius Posted March 15, 2005 Report Posted March 15, 2005 (edited) arriceffron's post makes no sense. Edited March 15, 2005 by Cornelius Quote
Cornelius Posted March 15, 2005 Report Posted March 15, 2005 No, we cross-posted. My response was to ariceffron's post, as I edited it after seeing that yours intervened. As to your comment, I do see your point, and thought it witty the way you stated it, though I don't agree with it in the particulars. Aside from that, your petty attacks against me, across the board, are just inane. If you have some disagreement with me, then have the balls to state it rather than just posting the juvenile snipes that you do. Quote

Cornelius Posted March 15, 2005 Report Posted March 15, 2005 Lee Morgan is not that great that having all his records saves you from the utter illogic of what you posted. Quote
