marcello Posted March 8, 2005 Report Posted March 8, 2005 (edited) I was NYC last weekend for some personal and professional business and a well known artist and friend suggested we see Italian saxophonist Rosario Giuliani and his group at Smoke. The way he said it to me was " Let's go see Rosario Guilaini, the best alto saxophonist on the planet". This is high praise from my friend, but I had never heard of him before. Well Rosario and his band of Pietro Lussu on piano, Gianluca Renzi on bass and Marcello Di Leonardo on drums were nothing short of fantasic playing some mostly origional compositions Allof the member were great players, especialy bassist Renzei who had a firm and beautiful sound and Di Leonardo's churing drums but the special joy was to hear Giuliani who would put all of the New York saxophonists to shame with his fire, facilty and soulfull sound. There were times when he could remind me of Trane on alto during his most lyrical peroid. Rosario is just one more example of of Jazz being a INTERNATIONAL MUSIC now, more than ever! He records for Dreyfus; I picked up two cds at the gig and had a nice talk with him and the band. I'm a huge fan now! Anyone else heard of him here?Rosario Giuliani Web Site Edited March 8, 2005 by marcello Quote

Guest DizzySpells Posted March 8, 2005 Report Posted March 8, 2005 Saw him live three times so far, although he's difficult to catch in Northern Europe outside of jazz festivals (he does play Paris a lot and will again soon, afaik). He's been called the "Italian fury". Ain't that the truth. That guy pours his soul out when playing. Very dedicated. I like that. Quote
