Dmitry Posted March 6, 2005 Report Posted March 6, 2005 (edited) A question from a non-musician - is this a phrase from one of his compositions, and which one? Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx Edited March 6, 2005 by Dmitry Quote
Big Wheel Posted March 6, 2005 Report Posted March 6, 2005 Nothing's coming to mind...almost looks like a part of the "So What" solo, but I don't think that's it either... Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted March 6, 2005 Report Posted March 6, 2005 It's Solar, a tune composed not by Davis but by guitarist Chuck Wayne. Mike Quote
Big Wheel Posted March 6, 2005 Report Posted March 6, 2005 D'oh! I should have recognized that... Quote
Spontooneous Posted March 6, 2005 Report Posted March 6, 2005 How fitting. Somebody else's tune attributed to him on his tombstone. Now I'm remembering Eddie Vinson saying, "Here's a tune I wrote for Miles..." Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted March 6, 2005 Report Posted March 6, 2005 Oddly enough, it's Wayne who is buried in that grave. Mike Quote
bertrand Posted March 6, 2005 Report Posted March 6, 2005 (edited) Does it actually claim on the tombstone that Miles composed it? Not to defend the estate or anything, but the excerpt from 'Solar' could be there just because it is associated with Miles, even if he didn't write it. I'm sure the estate claims it is Miles' tune, however. I think I read (or was told) that the piece was called 'Solar' as a tribute to Sonny Berman. Can anyone confirm this? Bertrand. bertrand Posted March 6, 2005 Report Posted March 6, 2005 (edited) Another question - when did the word start leaking out that 'Tune Up' and 'Four' were composed by Eddie Vinson? Max Roach announces 'Tune Up' as a Vinson composition at the 1958 Newport festival. I wonder if this shocked those in the know in the crowd (most of the audience probably didn't give a fuck), or if it was already common knowledge by then among the jazz nuts. Bertrand. Spontooneous Posted March 6, 2005 Report Posted March 6, 2005 As one of the four musicians on the Miles recording of Tune Up, Max was certainly in a position to know early. Quote
robviti Posted March 6, 2005 Report Posted March 6, 2005 "Sir" Miles Davis was inducted into the Knights of Malta in November 1988. Quote
Ron S Posted March 6, 2005 Report Posted March 6, 2005 Hmmmmmm . . . . . . . and all this time I thought the Bronx was in New York City. Quote
AllenLowe Posted March 6, 2005 Report Posted March 6, 2005 I also have my doubts that Miles wrote Donna Lee - Quote
AllenLowe Posted March 6, 2005 Report Posted March 6, 2005 (edited) and I thought the name Solar referred obliquely (as in Lunar) to How High the Moon which, though on different changes, had similar major/minor transitions - Edited March 6, 2005 by AllenLowe Quote
MartyJazz Posted March 6, 2005 Report Posted March 6, 2005 I also have my doubts that Miles wrote Donna Lee - I'd like to know what your doubts are based on, not that I agree or disagree. I once mistakenly attributed the composition to Bird while speaking with Archie Shepp and he corrected me quite emphatically (albeit nicely) that it was composed by Miles. Quote
