7/4 Posted February 8, 2008 Author Report Posted February 8, 2008 Tuned E,A,D,G,G,B,B,E,E (low to high) Right. My tuning of choice for a long time would make it D,A,D,G,G,B,B,D,D OK! Interesting, but you're playing Jazz with this? Quote

Interesting, but you're playing Jazz with this? I'm not really a jazz player, I was a guitarist long before I started listening to jazz so I had at least a partially developed "style" beforehand. I'm influenced by everyone from Hendrix & Trower, Tony Iommi, David Gilmour, Stephen Stills, Robert Fripp, Ty Tabor from King's X...and also players like Fahey, Kottke, Bert Jansch, Nick Drake, etc. But I also enjoy jamming along to Jimmy Smith & Reuben Wilson albums! BFrank Posted February 9, 2008 Report Posted February 9, 2008 What does everyone think of Guitar Player Magazine? I picked up a single copy for $6.50 (!) and then realized that I could get a whole year's subscription for $15 - so I did. Quote

I should get a sub to GP again. Vintage Guitar is pretty good for equipment reviews and tempting guitar porn. Quote

I hear ya, I started out as a guitarist trying to forge a progressive folk/rock influence into my playing. I was into Will Ackerman, Alex De Grassi, Steve Tibbetts, Michael Hedges (whom I still admire for his originality and pure heart), Eric Johnson, Shawn Lane, and several others. Now, when I look back at it, it's pretty crazy I came from all of that. I now play electric majority of the time. I'm now heavily influenced by players like Bill Frisell (who is my biggest inspiration), John Abercrombie, Pat Metheny, Ben Monder, Egberto Gismonti, and Jim Hall. Quote
Guest bluenote82 Posted February 21, 2008 Report Posted February 21, 2008 I still use all kinds of alternate tunings. They sound pretty awesome on the electric. I love alternate tunings. They give you a different approach. Quote

I thought Acoustic Guitar magazine was great when if first came out, but something seems to have changed. Quote

7/4 Posted March 9, 2008 Author Report Posted March 9, 2008 Sub are cheaper. I should get one to GP, I hear about the latest issue and then it's a week or two before I can check out a copy. Quote

AllenLowe Posted March 9, 2008 Report Posted March 9, 2008 virtually everything in it is an advertisement - articles, reviews; honestly, I feel it's quite degraded, no integrity whatsoever. An occasionally interesting article, however - Quote

jazzbo Posted March 9, 2008 Report Posted March 9, 2008 Well, I paid off the house this month and to celebrate I bought something I always wanted: a Hummingbird. I didn't buy a Gibson, I didn't want to spend over two grand. . . I bought an Epiphone. Not the same thing I know, but nice. . . I got the ebony finish one. Then a friend who just had his first child (at age 50!) asked me a great question: Did I want to buy his full size bass violin? Guess what my answer was? Got it today, it's set up with steel strings and a pickup, at least for now. So now I have this to add to my stringed collection (Hummingbird, Ovation "Breadwinner" solid body guitar, and "Wishbass" fretless bass built by Steve Wishnevsky.) Quote
7/4 Posted March 9, 2008 Author Report Posted March 9, 2008 What did you pay? I'd love to have one, but don't have the room and I'd really rather have a cello. I don't have room for that either. Quote
jazzbo Posted March 9, 2008 Report Posted March 9, 2008 (edited) I paid a grand. Bass, gig bag, stand. I've got the room. . . three bedroom house to myself now. Still don't know where to set up my old Sonor drum kit though, hasn't been set up in eleven years! Edited March 9, 2008 by jazzbo Quote

jazzbo Posted March 9, 2008 Report Posted March 9, 2008 More like this B! I went with the ebony one because the cherry sunburst. . . is gaudier than the Gibsons. I had a friend throughout the seventies that had an old cherry sunburst Gibson. . . beautiful sounding guitar. . . I had a Martin D18 at the same time and wished I had his instead! Quote
7/4 Posted March 9, 2008 Author Report Posted March 9, 2008 (edited) $300 at Musicians Friend...that's one in-ek-spensive guitar! Edited March 10, 2008 by 7/4 Quote
BFrank Posted March 10, 2008 Report Posted March 10, 2008 Nice, Lon! I'm thinking of a Telecaster that I saw recently for about $500. It's called a "Blackout" - made in Mexico - and has 3 pickups. Looks cool, anyway ... Quote
7/4 Posted March 14, 2008 Author Report Posted March 14, 2008 (edited) DOES look like a cool Tele. Nice! I have a pair of Teles, but I'd like one with a 9.5" radius fingerboard. There's already the Nashville Tele with three pups, this one costs a little less. . Edited March 14, 2008 by 7/4 Quote
Shawn Posted March 14, 2008 Report Posted March 14, 2008 If I win the lottery, I'm buying one of these.... Quote
