7/4
Thanks - sounds interesting. I've been using a Fulltone OCD pedal to make the amp sound good at low volume, but this is definitely an intriguing alternative. I suppose for a combo amb like my Champ installing this require a sodering iron? Nah. Amp->speaker cable->THD attenuator->speaker cable->speaker. You just have to get the right box with the correct ohm rating for your speaker load.

AllenLowe
I would just get a good low-powered tube amp - the best current production one in my opinion is the Pro Junior, which uses a pair of el84s. problem is, you have to find one that does not hum; if you do, and upgrade to a weber 10a125 (like an old Jensen P10q), get a decent preamp 12ax7 and some good el 84s, it's as good as any vintage tube amp. You will notice the difference, the nice power-tube breakup, the decent headroom and the warmth - pedals tend to make everyone sound alike, I think - Edited June 12, 2007 by AllenLowe

You see...you didn't shave your amp, now it's too hairy and too loud. I thought a '70s Champ had cables and plus for connecting a speaker. Is it hard wired into the head and clipped on to the speaker?
J Larsen
There is a narrow cable coming from the head - much narrower than a standard guitar cable - with clips on the other end that attach to the speaker. The amp is identical to the image you posted.
7/4
So they are hardwired. You could at least get advice about it from whoever you get it from. I got mine from Lark St. in Teaneck, NJ.
7/4
I thought it was like a Princeton, note speaker plugged into the amp.
jazzbo
Allen, if I ever get serious about my guitar playing, this would be the amp I'd try to get and use with a cabinet: http://www.decware.com/newsite/zenguitar.htm Decware makes fantastic tube equipment, I've been a stereo customer of theirs for years, completely satisfied. Decware also makes a combo amp. . . wooden case with speaker. You sould at least call Steve Deckert and talk to him about his EL84 guitar amp. . . .(309) 671 2428 Edited June 12, 2007 by jazzbo
J Larsen
What is the wattage on that? I have been looking for a 1W or less tube amp. I know zvex makes one, but I'm not a big fan of their stuff (except the fuzz factory, which is pretty fun).
J Larsen
I thought it was like a Princeton, note speaker plugged into the amp. No, it's not like a Princeton - at least mine isn't. I've found that the 60s and 70s stuff isn't always perfectly consistent in design. Actually, I've been keeping half an eye out for a second champ - I've been into playing in stereo lately. 7/4
Responds wonderfully to your favorite peddle or processors too! Come on man...little kids make peddles.
7/4
Stereo Champs should be fun! The last few gigs I did were in stereo. I had separate loops in each amp. I should try three amps...
J Larsen
Stereo Champs should be fun! The last few gigs I did were in stereo. I had separate loops in each amp. I should try three amps... I had fun playing stereo through my champ and my friend's fucked-up-but-in-a-cool-way-sounding pocket amp a couple weeks ago - the contrast between the classic sound of the champ and the badly-tuned-cheap-radio sound of the pocket amp was really interesting, especially using the stereo ouputs of my delay or voodoo vibe. For now I'm using my champ and a really cheap solid state practice amp for my stereo playing.
7/4
Stereo reverb is cool. You don't need much, it doesn't have to sound like the grand canyon.
J Larsen
I use a tiny bit of delay to approximate reverb, as champs don't have springs in them. That's one reason I've always wanted a princeton - they are just too loud for my apartment building, unfortunately.
scottb
Here's my latest project. I put together a guitar for a guy at work (it seems everyone at work plays guitar.) It is patterned after the Tom Delonge strats including the Invader pickup which is ridiculously hot. (16K) This was a challenge for me because other than the hardtail bridge, it is the antithesis of what I want in a strat. But like they say, the customer is always right! I bet you could have him build it in full triode mode and be about 2 watts per channel; it's the same chassis etc. as his basic stereo amp which is triode, 2 watt. Cliff Englewood
Does anyone here play an Ibanez? I have seen one of their ES-335 type guitars and was quite impressed with it? Any opinions? Thanks in advance.
Joe G
Good guitars. I played one exclusively on gigs for over a decade.
Cliff Englewood
Yea, nice one, I have to say I was just blown away by the finish, it just looked so good, too good in fact to have come from China. I know that's not the most important thing, and the action and fittings seem to be of very high quality too, just looked/felt better than the Korean Epiphone's which are around the same price. And now for some guitar porn...... They also do a "spalted maple" version, although there is no mention of it on the offical site.....
