Ron S
What kinda pups you gonna put in that bad boy?
scottb
I'm going to use the Mighty Mites that came out of the M800. That's what Cort puts in their higher end models. They have three leads so I'm going to put in a pull / push pot for a coil tap. I usually don't care for coil taps but I was so impressed with the range of tones coming from my new Cort that I thought I'd give it a try in this one. The upgrade will essentially make this guitar a Cort M520 except with a bolt on neck and a different body material (Agathis - whatever that is). With a set neck, if it's good it's good but if it's bad, your screwed. A BAD bolt on neck however can be shimmed and made to be better. scottb
To answer my own question (you gotta love the internet!) Agathis robusta - another name Kauri Pine found in Australia (Robusta indeed!) Edited March 24, 2005 by scottb

scottb
That's why I thought I would stick to using the Cort pickups and features found on other M- series Cort guitars. Buyers don't like too many modifications. When I get to work on that Tele I'm thinking about... well, that' another story. I'll have to wait for a thunderstorm to spark that baby to life! I'll try to avoid any Abby Normal pickups!!
Ron S
Then don't buy 'em from anyone who looks like this:

slide_advantage_redoux
Okay, I have decided to post a pic of my guitar setup, even though I am mainly a trombone player (or dinosaur rider as Sangrey reminds me). I found this '79 Ibanez 2630 Artist in my favorite pawn shop. I could have broken my neck rushing back the next day to buy it. I knew it was special. What a great work of art. Those Japanese manufacturers really outdid themselves during that period of time. I sold my tex mex tele (nashville deluxe) to pay for it, and have NEVER regretted it. This one is going nowhere. I only wish my photo skills were such to give this lovely gtr justice. Nice setup, and that's a sweet guitar! I used to have a Roland JC-120 amp like that. I wish I still had it. I picked up the Roland a week after getting the Ibanez. I had been running my tele through a Line 6 2-10 amp, and it just was not a good amp for the Ibanez (which incidentally had been souped up with the addition of Seymour Duncans) This particular Roland is a newer generation amp, and it just isn't as quiet as the old ones were - or at least I think so. Is it normal to hear a hiss when no signal is going through the amp? I mean, it is powered up of course, and the gtr is plugged in, but even with the volume on the gtr dialed down, I hear hiss. It isn't that bad, but I guess I expected total silence. One other thing, the amp is a bitch to cart around; I am grateful for the casters. I just got a new 30-watt Vox Valvetronix (has a tube in the preamp), and also was surprised to hear significant hiss coming from it when the master volume is up a bit, even when there's nothing plugged into it. Jeff Blake told me that his tube amp also has hiss, so I just assumed that it's because of the tube.
AfricaBrass
I don't remember hiss from my Roland JC-120 which I purchased it in 1986. Yeah, thank goodness for those casters. When we used to play in Hollywood, we'd often have a hard time finding parking. I remember riding my amp (slowly) down a hill to the gig, like the freakin' Lone Ranger. I told Ron that I'm used to hiss from my tube amps, but my solid state Tech 21 amp is dead quiet.

scottb
Now that I have my digital camara back... Here's my Cort M800 with the new pickups (Stewart McDonald Golden Age.) I'll probably change them to chrome just for cosmetic reasons.
scottb
Now here's my new Cort M200 before I got a hold to it.
scottb
And here's my Cort M200 after 24 hours in my possesion. I am going to change the pickup mounting rings to cream (still too much black.) Pictured below the guitar are the cream rings that came from Stew Mac. They are more orange and will not leave that package! I've got some Gibson cream rings in the mail so hopefully they will look better. Besides the cosmetics, I've added a push/pull pot for a coil tap. This baby rocks now! My only complaint is how fragile the finish is. It has already flaked a bit just from a few pick strokes. (Imagine Pete Townsend doing the windmill;) )

AfricaBrass
Here's the final product. Nice! So... Are you still going to sell it? Or have you grown attached to her?
AfricaBrass
Yep, the Alleycat was on my front porch when I got home from work last Friday. It's a nice little guitar! However, I think it was Wednesday or Thursday night I was lying in bed thinking, "Why did I order that thing?". So I'm trying to decide if it's going to fill an important enough role to justify keeping it, despite the great price. I mean, am I really going to want to leave it at work? And is it good enough to play on a gig? It's not as comfortable to wear and play as my Ibanez, that's for sure. I'll have to think about it some more. I know, I'm a big party pooper. I know this is a real late reply, Joe. I'm sorry if the Epiphone isn't working out for you. I know they did sell out, so you could probably sell yours for a profit. Actually, I hope you got over your buyer's remorse and are playing the heck out of it. :rsmile:
scottb
So... Are you still going to sell it? Or have you grown attached to her? It really is a nice playing guitar. I like the look of it much better now as well. I might keep it a while and see how it goes. I've got the fever for guitar projects and I just spent over an hour looking at strat bodies on Ebay. I will probably sell the Cort when I'm ready to pull the trigger on a new project.
Ron S
That looks great, Scott--much classier looking and now it doesn't look like Darth Vader's guitar (did you know he played?) . I'm sure it now sounds as good as it looks. Too bad Arkansas isn't a little closer to Philly--I could have given you your next project. I just took my new Agile Cool Cat jazz box to a luthier to change the pups to Duncan Seth Lover 55's and to do a set-up.

Hardbopjazz
Does anyone remember the D'Angelico Guitar that I believe was called the Manhattan? It had a strange shape to the rear of the body. Sort of a loop to the shape. I've been trying to find a photo of it on line but no luck.
