Ron S Posted March 16, 2005 Report Posted March 16, 2005 if you say that they suck again we're gonna have a problem . . . sizewise I think we may be pretty good matchup FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT! (come on, the rest of you guys, let's egg 'em on) Quote
AfricaBrass Posted March 16, 2005 Report Posted March 16, 2005 I've heard that Pyramid flatwounds are the best strings out there. They're a little too pricey for me, so I've been using the D'Addario chromes. Are those 11's, Jeff? I think you told me before, but I forgot. Yes, I'm using 11's on my Epiphone Casino and had them on my DeArmond jazzbox. I like flatwound 11's. On my non-flatwound strung guitars, I used D'Addario XL roundwound 10's. Quote
Ron S Posted March 16, 2005 Report Posted March 16, 2005 OK--next micro-gear survey: for jazz guitar, what brand, style, and thickness of pick do you use? Quote
Joe G Posted March 16, 2005 Report Posted March 16, 2005 (edited) Jesus! Actually, an employee of Elderly asked me exactly that question when I was there on Monday trying out that Alleycat. The way he put it was, "do you use a rock pick?" I said... what? He then brought out these really fat picks (which I had tried once and didn't like), explaining that he felt the pick I was using took the "jazz" out of the sound. Uh yeah, okay... I use "heavy" picks ( the Peavey ones that look like mother-of-pearl say 1.00mm on 'em). p.s. GHS SUCKS! HA! Edited March 16, 2005 by Joe G Quote
scottb Posted March 16, 2005 Report Posted March 16, 2005 (edited) OK Jazzboy, IT'S GO TIME!! Next time I'm in Michigan, you'd better be scarce! Or better yet, I'll just hire Randy to kick your ass! Drummers are always tough and they have sticks and stuff. Randy, I just PM'd you! (you're in trouble now Joe, I warned you!) Edited March 16, 2005 by scottb Quote
Ron S Posted March 16, 2005 Report Posted March 16, 2005 Jesus! So, you think I'm nit-PICK-ing? Quote
Ron S Posted March 16, 2005 Report Posted March 16, 2005 Who wants to see Randy play Wipeout on Joe's head? Quote
7/4 Posted March 16, 2005 Author Report Posted March 16, 2005 OK--next micro-gear survey: for jazz guitar, what brand, style, and thickness of pick do you use? Jim Donlop 474R STUBBY JAZZ PICKS 3.0 mm, the purple one on the right. Quote
Sundog Posted March 16, 2005 Report Posted March 16, 2005 I have a real aversion to using picks in general, however when I do use a pick it's a Herco combination flat/thumbpick (medium gauge). Quote

Peter Johnson Posted March 17, 2005 Report Posted March 17, 2005 ...And here I am playing in my favorite pose with my new Cort M800 Ouch! How long did it take you to stand up? Quote
scottb Posted March 17, 2005 Report Posted March 17, 2005 How long did it take you to stand up I just developed a new found respect for T Bone walker! As you can see I'm only pulling a "half-bone" as we call it, and I nearly split my pants and fell over trying to get up, nearly crushing my guitar!! T Bone, you da MAN! Quote

As you can see I'm only pulling a "half-bone" as we call it, and I nearly split my pants and fell over trying to get up, nearly crushing my guitar!! T Bone, you da MAN! I'd STILL be on the floor and my guitar would look like Cecil Taylor's piano. Nothing left but splinters. Quote

Ron S Posted March 17, 2005 Report Posted March 17, 2005 Here's me practicing (wrestling) with my Broadway. Scott, do you still like that Hal Leonard Jazz Guitar Book? I seem to recall you praising it recently (which is amazing, since I can't even recall what I ate for breakfast this morning). Quote
scottb Posted March 17, 2005 Report Posted March 17, 2005 Scott, do you still like that Hal Leonard Jazz Guitar Book? It's a good book for me. Really helping with getting familiar with a lot of chords. Also, there's a lot of instruction on soloing that looks helpful although I haven't really jumped into any of it yet. My goal right now is to be able to open my fakebook and be able to comp on most tunes. Then I will start expanding my soloing beyond the basics blues stuff. Now that I've got the right pick, I'm on my way! Quote
Ron S Posted March 17, 2005 Report Posted March 17, 2005 Now that I've got the right pick, I'm on my way! It's all in the pick, Man! Quote
Joe G Posted March 17, 2005 Report Posted March 17, 2005 Yes, steer clear of those "rock" picks. Quote

scottb Posted March 17, 2005 Report Posted March 17, 2005 DUDE! That guitar looks enormous! It is big, but not THAT big. That was the humorous effect I was going for. Quote
