I did buy this one and it's one of my favorite Mosaics (although I have to say that I say that about probably 3/4 of Mosaics!). But really this one rises near the top for me...one reason is that I had NO Anita O'Day leader dates in my collection before I got the box, so it was a wonderful new world for me. Second, I just think at that point in time there was no finer jazz singer. What she lacked in technical ability she more than made up for with swing, swing, swing and a creativity and fearless chance-taking attitude. Not everything in this admittedly way big set is totally riveting, but the best is desert island music.

And for me what is the "best?" Well I know Oscar Peterson gets little love on this board but I can't see how anyone couldn't be enamored with their collaborations. Maybe he did mean spiritedly try to push her over the brink in his lightening fast accompaniment, but if so she won that duel big time, matching him and bettering him at every turn.

I love the McFarland stuff, and the all-too-few arrangements by Giuffre. It's almost all great.

I'm sure the size/price will put some off, but that's a shame. Oh, excellent remastered sound, too.

granted, i enjoy anita and own the majority of her catalog (which renders this box superfluous for me) but this statement just *begs* for debate... <no offense intended before guns are drawn>

I got the box. This box is in fact my first Morsaic purchase (along with Duke Reprise Box - a double purchase). Great music and I am a satisfied customer.

According to Mosaic, there are 18 albums represented in the box. That comes out to roughly $8 per album, spread out over the nine discs. When you look at it from that perspective, the set is really quite a bargain. And some of these sessions ain't gonna see the light of day any place else any time soon. Whoa. I'm talking myself into ordering this puppy. :)

thanks DrJ.... good review... it kinda fits where I'm at... Didn't know much of her stuff, listened to the online samples and managed to fine a couple of mp3's of the Oscar Peterson stuff and BAM!!! I'm totally interested...

I foolishly took the plunge... but I suspect I'll be very glad I did especially 5/10 years from now...

there are very few Mosaics that I end up regret buying... I'm pretty confident that this will not be one of them..

great summary and thanks

i have to revisit this thread and admit that maybe i wasn't as supportive of anita as i should have been. since mike's last reply i've been incorporating this material into my listening pattern. given the breadth of what's she's done, which would be supremely documented by the mosaic set, her career w/ verve is impressive.

Bought this set from Mosaic recently and it wasn't even on my radar ! Very glad I did - it's one of their unheralded gems. Just working my way through disks 7-9. Very fine arrangements from Bill Holman and Russ Garcia on the disk 7 and Anita is truly a class act. Beautifully re-mastered by Malcolm Addey. How can you go wrong? :tup

One big thumb :tup up for this set. I think it's the best of the vocal Mosaics and well ahead of whatever's in second place. I'd even rank it fairly high in terms of the entire Mosaic catalog.

Up over and out.

Very little--you can count the tracks on which she scats ("Slaughter On 10th Ave." comes to mind) on one hand.
