Hello:

This Tuesday, an album titled John Coltrane Quintet with Eric Dolphy will be released through Koch and Passport. Was this recording ever issued in the past? Where and when was it recorded? Are Kock and Passport labels with good sound quality?

Thank you for any help.

the tunes

1. My Favorite Things

2. Mr. P.C.

3. Miles' Mode (Red Planet)

aren't exactly rare where the large number of live recordings of this 5tet are concerned. IOW: no idea

I would bet that this is indeed the 'Birdland' material from February 9, 1962, which was originally issued on bootleg LP by Boris Rose (see the Mingus 1961-62 Birdland thread in the Discography section of this forum) and which has surfaced on various bootleg LP and CD labels since. Rough timings for these 3 tracks that I've owned on open reel tape for many years are: My Favorite Things (19-1/2 mins), Mr. P.C. (11 mins) and Miles Mode aka The Red Planet (10-1/2 mins).

I bought it on one of those Rose labels about 25 years ago, might have been called THE DYNAMIC DUO, can't remember. Pretty sure it's turned up on several "budget" labels since then. Sound quality is typical early-60s braodcast/bootleg - not "hi-fi", but good enough to enjoy w/o incurring aural strain.

It's material to have, for sure. That was one helluva band, to put it mildly.

All three of those tunes were issued on the Pablo boxed set "Live Trane" - where Fantasy claimed they were from Hamburg, Germany 11/25/61.

See http://home.att.net/~dawild/jcdisc62.htm#620209

When the error was brought to Fantasy's attention, they refused to acknowledge it.

In case anyone on the board hasn't picked this up (I know that Michael F. has, obviously), the Live Trane controversy is also documented on David Wild's site, here.

While I haven't picked up the Fantasy box yet, I have followed that controversy a bit, and it's just sad that the Fantasy folks proof to be such beton-heads! I mean hey, have a look at the Wild site and you quickly realise how much Fantasy feghed up there! They really should offer a corrected version of that box!

Even more I consider this a pity as I suppose that 80 or 90% of the people who got that box never actually stumble across Wilds site and never get to know about all the errors in that box.

Dig the photo presumably of Coltrane at that site. It looks like a computerized composite of Coltrane & Miles. At least to me it does, I've never seen that particular photo of Trane before.

Wow, that photo is indeed spooky!
