My favorite movies are The Third Man and Lover Come Back. Since neither won the Oscar, I would go with them.

I've never taken the Oscars seriously. Too much politics and sentiment.

'The Third Man'

Yep for me top 5, so why do you like this film so much?

In 1940 Rebecca beat out The Philadelphia Story, The Grapes of Wrath, and others

In 1941 How Green Was My Valley beat out Citizen Kane, The Maltese Falcom, and Suspicion among others.

Some good movies being made, eh?

I'm with you, Adam.

And have more...

The 1955 Academy Award went to 'Marty'. Not a bad one. That was the year of Charles Laughton's 'Night of the Hunter', a masterpiece!

The following year, Best Film went to 'Around the World in 80 Days'! That was the year of John Ford's 'The Searchers'.

1959 was the year of 'Ben Hur' which got the prize. Over 'North By Northwest', 'Some Like It Hot' or 'Rio Bravo'!

Don't care about the Academy Awards anymore!

I guess it depends on your perspective. I liked Malkovitch, didn't like Adaptation, and really enjoyed Sunshine. So for me, Sunshine is really the best. The other two are a bit too smug almost in their -- hey look how weird I can be -- cleverness. Sunshine married the cleverness to a more genuine emotional core (and that's what often drives Oscar voters - that they can care about the characters) so is a better movie in those terms. Feel free to disagree with me though.

Invitation accepted.

I liked "Malkovich" best. It's originality, humor, and pacing just tickled me in the right spot. I also dug the point about our need to live vicariously through celebrities - even when they're eating leftover Chinese and ordering bathroom rugs from catalogs- to the point that we lose ourselves. The freshness of Kaufmann's style when this came out really grabbed me - an impact that can't be duplicated once you're inured to it a little.

"Adapation" was, I'll admit, just a clever trick - but so very clever. Special resononce for writers (I'm not one.). Essentially, though, another movie about the movies. Again the humor and pacing kept me entertained throughout, even the final segment that many disliked.

"Sunshine", for the most part, seemed an expansion of the ideas contained in the subconscious sequence from Malkovich - a slower and watered-down one. The big idea- we're better off with our experiences and pasts, warts and all- is a good one, but not unique. Think of Capra's "Wonderful Life"

I am thinking back to two instances where I went to see much-hyped movies on opening night, and neither disappointed - Do the Right Thing, and later Silence of the Lambs. My recollection was that Do the Right Thing, with its enormously important story and message especially focused on New Yorkers at a rough time (after several racial killings), was completely ignored by the Oscars, poll takers etc, but that Silence won BIG with the help of a studio promo machine. (Is that right? And imo, Demme seems kind of a lightweight now.) Anyway, I should have been more cynical earlier in my life, but Spike Lee has made some excellent and varied movies, certainly worthy of major recognition, but he has no shot up against award machinery. It's all BS, it's just an annual TV show. I think Hoffman or Brando was right when he called the oscars garish and obscene thirty five years ago. Pathetic fragile big egos on display.

So, to answer the question, some favorite movies never to win an oscar:

Blood Simple

Rushmore

Do the Right Thing

Young Frankenstein

Life of Brian

The Grateful Dead Movie

Stranger Than Paradise

The Long Good Friday

Of the films you mention two stand out for me, the 'Life of Brian' and ' Do the Right Thing'.

Pythion's 'Life of Brian' was for me one of the funniest films I have watched, I recently bought the 'special DVD' version, and I do not usually like comedy films but the irreverence, the indifference towards religion is something special. 'Holy Grail' was good, but this is very very Good.

Without a doubt, Chinatown. Not to denigrate GFII, that rare occurance when a sequel is perhaps better than the original, but I happen to think Chinatown is a nearly perfect movie. My all time favorite. Great writing, casting, acting and directing, with the flawlessly rendered look and feel of late '30's Los Angeles and perhaps the best genre capturing title tune ever courtesy of Jerry Goldsmith. Jack Nicholson at the pinnacle of his considerable creative powers.

Up over and out.

I'm in complete areement, Dave. :tup:tup:tup
