Guest ariceffron Posted February 26, 2005 Report Posted February 26, 2005 SOME PEOPLE SAY JAZ IS THE ONLY AMERICAN MUSIC BUT THAT IS COMPLETE BULLSHIT: THERE IS A HUGE BLUGRASS FEST HERE IN TACOMA THIS WEEKEND- "WINTERGRASS"-- BLUEGRASS IS WHATS GREAT ABOUT AMERICA. AND MANY PEOPLE ALL FROM ALL DIFFERENT PLACES LIKE TO PLAY IT. IT IS A HAPPY MUSIC BUT SOMETIMES IT CAN BE MELONCHOLY AS WELL. THERES MUSIC ALL OVER THE HOTEL- ITS NOT JUST THE MAIN STAGES-- PEOPLE JAM IN CIRCLES IN EVERY CORNER OF EVERY FLOOR. MANDOLINS, BANJOS, DOBRO, GUITARS AND FIDDLES ARE SOME OF THE INSTRUMENTS YOU HEAR THERE. IT IS VERY HONEST AND GOOD MUSIC, AND MAKES ME PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN IN THESE TROUBLED TIMES Quote
JSngry Posted February 26, 2005 Report Posted February 26, 2005 Some of them bluegrass cats are pretty heavy players. Walk around with your ears open, and you're liable to hear some incredible stuff. Quote
kenny weir Posted February 26, 2005 Report Posted February 26, 2005 Bluegrass swings: Without doubt one of the reasons I've become a jazz fan - and something I'd like to return to someday in some way. Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted February 26, 2005 Report Posted February 26, 2005 I love bluegrass - in an odd way it connects my love of jazz and UK folk music. I recall hearing a programme a few years back where it was claimed that 'scientific tests showed' that it was the genre of music that generated most brain activity. Probably means nothing more than 'they play fast'. But I thought it was interesting given the way the music is often parodied in the UK - the non-too-bright, slow of speech, inbred Appalachian playing a banjo on the porch. Quote
Joe G Posted February 26, 2005 Report Posted February 26, 2005 I cut my musical teeth on bluegrass. And I still dig it. Quote
