scottb Posted February 24, 2005 Report Posted February 24, 2005 (edited) The nearby Hastings has A LOT of Audioquest punchouts for CHEAP! I was not familiar with the label but there were many interesting looking titles with players like Mike Stern, John Ambercrombie, Tommy Flannagan, Charles Fambrough and I thought I saw Curtis Fuller on one of them but can't seem to find it now on the list. Anyway if anyone is interested I could ship it to you for about $5 with discounts for multiple discs. Here's an list of their TITLES. I didn't see all of these there but most of them. If you're interested let me know. Edited February 24, 2005 by scottb Quote
Spontooneous Posted February 24, 2005 Report Posted February 24, 2005 That Jeff Palmer title is highly recommended to all. Arthur Blythe and a B-3! Quote
scottb Posted February 24, 2005 Author Report Posted February 24, 2005 The Jeff Plamer was the one I picked up yesterday and I was pleasantly suprised. The Bennie Wallace with Tommy Flanagan also looked good. Quote
jazzbo Posted February 24, 2005 Report Posted February 24, 2005 The Newton is a trip. I've been tempted by the Larry Willis releases but have never heard them. Quote
Spontooneous Posted February 24, 2005 Report Posted February 24, 2005 The Willises are just fine, thank you. Both beautifully thought out and executed. Quote
scottb Posted March 3, 2005 Author Report Posted March 3, 2005 (edited) Larry Willis' A TRIBUTE TO SOMEONE is the disc with Curtis Fuller on Trombone I was referring to. Edited March 3, 2005 by scottb Quote
jlhoots Posted March 3, 2005 Report Posted March 3, 2005 A Tribute To Someone is fine. You should get it Lon. Like you need another CD. Quote
scottb Posted March 3, 2005 Author Report Posted March 3, 2005 ?????? That's what I was thinking. Quote
MartyJazz Posted March 3, 2005 Report Posted March 3, 2005 The Jeff Plamer was the one I picked up yesterday and I was pleasantly suprised. The Bennie Wallace with Tommy Flanagan also looked good. I have both of the Bennie Wallace Audioquest CDs and I like 'em equally. Recommended. He's a very distinctive, unheralded tenor saxophonist, Dolphy & Rollins influences galore. I'd love to see him in concert but I think for the most part he's content to stay in L.A. and do film score writing. Quote
jazzbo Posted March 3, 2005 Report Posted March 3, 2005 Hmmm. . . I wonder if I would be content to stay in LA and do film scoring? I guess regarding the Newton I should have said "It's trippy." Much clearer, right? Quote
Big Wheel Posted March 3, 2005 Report Posted March 3, 2005 (edited) I think the confusion stems from there being no Newton title in the list Scott posted. edit: looks like this is the one-- 1023 James Newton Suite For Frida Kahlo Edited March 3, 2005 by Big Wheel Quote
jazzbo Posted March 3, 2005 Report Posted March 3, 2005 Is that all? Some people are so easily confused! That's the one! Quote
Tom in RI Posted March 3, 2005 Report Posted March 3, 2005 On the soul side of blues the Mighty Sam McClain discs on Audioquest are not to be missed. For more straight ahead, but subtle, blues, you can't go wrong with the Joe Beard titles. Quote
JSngry Posted March 3, 2005 Report Posted March 3, 2005 I think the confusion stems from there being no Newton title in the list Scott posted. Yeah, exactly. Thought I might've been tripping there for a second.... Quote
jazzbo Posted March 3, 2005 Report Posted March 3, 2005 I didn't even look at the list, sorry. It was the only Audioquest cd I had so I knew it was "out there." It's pretty good, interesting, need to dig it out again. Quote
JSngry Posted March 4, 2005 Report Posted March 4, 2005 I wonder if Hastings rotates their stock between stores or something. The one in Wichita Falls, Tx had a shitload of Audioquest last year, multiple copies of titles. A few weeks ago, they had none. Don't think there's that many jazz fans in Widhita Falls... Quote
scottb Posted March 4, 2005 Author Report Posted March 4, 2005 Maybe some jazz nerd told all his friends at some retarded internet chatroom and then he sent them... wait a second... Quote
king ubu Posted March 4, 2005 Report Posted March 4, 2005 big for the self-titled "Bennie Wallace"! Wonderful playing by him and Flanagan! "The Old Songs" comes in a close second, in my opinion, but has some great moments, too - namely the three tunes were Lou Levy sits in. They both sound magnificient, too (again, the self-titled one better, to my ears). ubu Quote
scottb Posted March 4, 2005 Author Report Posted March 4, 2005 Audioquest is the same Audioquest that makes high end speakerwire and cables so they pride themselves on sound quality of their recordings. I picked up Tribute To Someone last night and so far, so good. I'll probably go back for the Bennie Wallace. Just to remind you these are cheap! $2.99 each. I just shipped 4 out to a member and the total was only $18. ($4.50 a disc aint bad) Quote
scottb Posted March 11, 2005 Author Report Posted March 11, 2005 Just another plug for these cuts outs if you can find them. My Hastings still has a lot. I've picked up several and haven't been disappointed yet. Today I got Bruce Katz Band TRANSFORMATION - I recognized his name, I think from Ronnie Earls band but I could be mistaken. I also got that self titled Bennie Wallace with Tommy Flanagan For $2.99 it's hard to beat! Quote
mikeweil Posted March 11, 2005 Report Posted March 11, 2005 The ones I have all sound excellent, although partly very different, as done by different engineers, including Pierre Sprey of Mapleshade (the Larry Willis with Gary Bartz). Musically they're all very good, too - when I got the Willis Tribute CD I thought "Why doesn't Herbie (to whom it is dedicated) make such a CD every now and then?" The Victor Lewis and Joey Calderazzo discs are great, if anyone's interested. Have the Palmer/Blythe, and love it, another trippy disc. Second the recommendation for the Wallaces. Quote
dova Posted March 14, 2005 Report Posted March 14, 2005 (edited) Hello: I'm a Hastings junkie when ever I'm traveling and see one. I have hit several in my geographic area and have accumulated over several dozen of the audioquest cut out cds. They are amazing for their sound quality and an excellent test disc for yor audio system if you're into that. Also, the players are all top notch and they cover jazz, blues, rock, and quasi new age genres. I was in the Fayetville area this weekend where there are 2 hastings and Scottb who started this thread is correct in that are a LOT of the audioquest cds for $2.99 most of which are still in print at $16.98 each. Also picked up Hilton Ruiz on Steeplechase and Idris Muhammad on the Cannonball label (the cd with the little steel ball sliding around the jewel case) doing duets with Gary Bartz, Joe Lovano, and George Coleman. scottb Posted June 2, 2005 Author Report Posted June 2, 2005 The cut-outs are now $1.99!! If you ever thought about getting some of these, now's your chance. I can ship them to you for just over a buck each. Let me know if you're interested. I just picked up three more myself, Bruce Katz, Charles Fambrough, and The Bush Crew (Les Arbuckle, Mike Stern, Abercrombie) Quote
