scottb Posted February 22, 2005 Report Posted February 22, 2005 (edited) How is this one? Anyone know. I saw it cheap in a local shop. (check out the organs on the cover! Not B3s I guess?) Edited February 22, 2005 by scottb Quote
Soul Stream Posted February 22, 2005 Report Posted February 22, 2005 How is this one? Anyone know. I saw it cheap in a local shop. (check out the organs on the cover! Not B3s I guess?) Awesome. Get it! Quote
scottb Posted February 22, 2005 Author Report Posted February 22, 2005 Seriously, What's the story with those organs? That one of the reasons I didn't get this one already. Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted February 22, 2005 Report Posted February 22, 2005 The one to get is Live At Paul's Mall. They are both playing B3 on that one and it's sloppy, but some really funky, cool moments on it. I have this record but I have not listened to it. Those are NOT Hammonds on the cover. I don't know what kind of organ they are off-hand. How is it, Mike? Quote
Soul Stream Posted February 22, 2005 Report Posted February 22, 2005 This is a GREAT freakin' record. They are playing Hammond B3s on the record...the organs on the cover are just props for the photo.... This is a KILLER record. It's like the Pall Mall thing without the slop (even though I love that too!). Seriously, it's more thought out songwise and really has a great sound to it with some nice tones comin' out of the boxes. There is some seriously COOKIN' sh*t on this record. Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted February 22, 2005 Report Posted February 22, 2005 Damn. I guess I should unwrap that baby and play it! Quote
Noj Posted February 22, 2005 Report Posted February 22, 2005 Like Jim I feel the Paul's Mall show is stronger, but I like them both. "Mozambique" is a favorite. Quote
Ragu Posted February 22, 2005 Report Posted February 22, 2005 I like the Paul's Mall recorded, O just wish it was recorded a little better, the CD I have is stereo (good) but the sound is a little compressed and distant. But they do have fun. Quote
Soul Stream Posted February 22, 2005 Report Posted February 22, 2005 (edited) Pulled this out last night and listened as I went to sleep. Really cookin and relaxed. However, the organs do sound different from the usual B3 settings. Groove has his going straight into an amp w/a phase shifter it sounds like, plus he kicks on the wah-wah quite a bit which is a blast. McGriffs tone is a bit straighter, more of his amp-up Solid State sound. Perhaps he's running through a solid state leslie or something. Tone's kinda different but still super cool. ...Never realized this before but recently read an in-depth interview/article with McGriff. He said Groove Holmes was the main person who pushed him into playing the organ. Said Groove schooled him and encouraged him by letting him sit in, ect. This went on for a couple of years before McGriff really took to it and started to hit the clubs. Interesting. Edited February 22, 2005 by Soul Stream Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted February 22, 2005 Report Posted February 22, 2005 That is interesting. I always assumed that McGriff started at roughly the same time as Holmes. Quote
Soul Stream Posted February 22, 2005 Report Posted February 22, 2005 (edited) That is interesting. I always assumed that McGriff started at roughly the same time as Holmes. That's what I thought. But from Jimmy's account, Groove was out there really WAAAYYY before the pack. McGriff actually played alto sax in Groove's band. It was during that tenure that Groove sat down at the organ after a gig and showed McGriff how to play "Danny Boy." Groove was very instrumental in McGriff trying the organ. Even against Jimmy's will, Groove insisted. Of course, what's funny is that this exactly mirrored what would later become the McGriff/Earland relationship. Even down to the horn. Wierd. scottb Posted February 23, 2005 Author Report Posted February 23, 2005 My name is Scott and I'm an organoholic. I have taken the first step in admitting I have the disease. I had to hit rock bottom to realize it but today was my eye opener. Today beside the Groove/McGriff I also received some discs in the mail which included TWO HEADED FREAP and OPEN HOUSE / PLAIN TALK. While I was buying the Groove/McGriff, I picked up a cutout in the bargain bin of Jeff Palmer. (I assume you guys know him.) I bought that just because he played B3 and I figured he was probably good if he was playing with John Abercrombie. I am actually enjoying the disc - obviously a student in the Larry Young school. Four organ discs in one day. And this one day after downloading a soundtrack to a 1965 movie I've never heard of just because there is an organist on it who may be Larry Young! Man I'm SICK! (by the way my wife's conversion is still not going well. She commented tonight that TWO HEADED FREAP sounded like... POLKA MUSIC!!!! Ouch! That hurt. First Lawrence Welk and now Polka! Quote

Soul Stream Posted February 23, 2005 Report Posted February 23, 2005 That's my bud George Braith w/Larry and Roy Haynes. George also has a great picture of himself, Larry Young, Grant Green and Jack McDuff standing together that I've been trying to get from him for years now. If I ever get it, I'll post it. Quote
scottb Posted February 23, 2005 Author Report Posted February 23, 2005 Here's a little something I cam across. This guy Scott the organ freak (not me I swear!) has a web site on which he has posted some live tapes that he recorded of Groove Holmes and Jack McDuff. Pretty cool! CHECK IT OUT! Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted February 23, 2005 Report Posted February 23, 2005 Scott has posted here, a few months ago under the name "organfreak", surprisingly enough! Quote
Soul Stream Posted February 23, 2005 Report Posted February 23, 2005 yes, I really dig those live tapes. Gives a little insight into the daily club routine those guys did for decades. Great music and banter! Quote
tjluke68 Posted February 23, 2005 Report Posted February 23, 2005 I just picked up 2 LRC CDs from Amazon of this session and the Live Session. I wish someone would do the transfer properly, the sound is too bassy at times and pins the needle to the point of distortion. Sounds like they copied the vinyl onto CD and forgot to check the line in levels... But better than not having it on CD at all. I don't know why someone licenses the Groove Merchant/Solid State stuff to a more adept company. I know some of it's been out by Capitol Jazz or Blue Note in the past... Quote

chris olivarez Posted February 24, 2005 Report Posted February 24, 2005 I was listening to and enjoying "McGriff Avenue" today. Quote
