patricia Posted February 20, 2005 Report Posted February 20, 2005 In my area of southern Alberta, we have what are known as "chinooks". They are warm air-masses which radically change the temps, sometimes two or three times in the same day. So, a person could get up in the morning and it's minus twenty degrees Celcius below zero and dumpin' down snow, By noon, it could be ten degrees above zero and thawing. A couple of hours could then go by and the temps could drop and the streets become trecherously icy. Although there are those who like the spikes of warm weather, I would rather know that it's going to be cold, or not cold, or whatever. I grew up in central British Columbia and at this time of year it was not uncommon for the temps to hover at around forty degrees below zero, for weeks at a time. I hate the cold, but there were four definite seasons there. In the summer it was hot as hell and there was a definite spring and fall. It was easier to aclimatize if you knew what the weather was likely to be. I hate snow and cold, but if I'm going to get some, I want to get it all at once, then it can go away until next year. Quote

I'm heading out there this week with my brother and a couple of friends! We want more snow! Here's a photo I took up in Sugarbush Vermont last week. A Lark Ascending Posted February 20, 2005 Report Posted February 20, 2005 The last heavy fall of snow I recall was in late 1990 when it brought all the powerlines down in Notts - it was a Friday night/Saturday morning and Nottingham shops had to shut after vainly attempting to struggle on by candlelight and without their tills. The Irish Electricity Board was called in to give emergency help to outlying parts of the county. Since then, apart from a few brief flurries...zilch. This matters if you work in a school. Heavy snow can mean a day or two off! Quote
tonym Posted February 20, 2005 Author Report Posted February 20, 2005 (edited) When I lived right on the east coast we had one Boxing Day completely snowed in. Drifts about 10 foot high too. About 3 years ago the river outside of our house (the one above) froze. That was at about minus 13 deg C. Other than that, not much at all. We are lucky in this part of the UK. We in this area have been aware of Rochester's getting more snow and while we do sympathize, better you than us. Seems like we received little snow this year... and then I heard that we're just 2" below normal. Strange. (I believe north of Buffalo has received more and south of Buffalo -- "ski country" -- its usual.) Can't wait to feel the sun's first warming rays. Quote
