Guy Berger Posted August 22, 2023 Report Posted August 22, 2023 I was listening to PLUMB, Murray’s new collab w/Questlove and Ray Angry - it’s excellent. Quote

I've listened to it all now. There's a lot of it but it's pretty uniformly good to my ears. Nice to hear Murray playing in this setting Quote
Rabshakeh Posted August 22, 2023 Report Posted August 22, 2023 Glad it is good. 4LPs are a bit of a pass from me. Just thinking about it makes me exhausted. Quote
mjazzg Posted August 22, 2023 Report Posted August 22, 2023 Yes, it soundtracked a lot of the work day. Murray has a special place in my Jazz heart, the first artist I got into in a big way and there was a lot to get into back then. Quote

AllenLowe Posted August 23, 2023 Report Posted August 23, 2023 (edited) Plumb has some interesting sonics. My problem is, you've heard David Murray once, well, you've pretty much heard what he can do. And Questlove sounds like a drum machine. Edited August 23, 2023 by AllenLowe Quote

Otherwise I've never been impressed. I think it's a halo from his time in Roots.in effect. Quote
Steve Reynolds Posted August 23, 2023 Report Posted August 23, 2023 I liked Murray back in the day but mostly I agree with Allen. One mode with no grit. Quote

I guess I'm on the opposite side. Not a completist, but his presence on a recording (especially a more recent one) makes me more likely to check it out. I like his sound and his playing, and am glad he's still making music. Quote
Guy Berger Posted November 10, 2024 Report Posted November 10, 2024 Just discovered Shakill’s Warrior. Great stuff! Quote

Holy Ghost Posted November 30, 2024 Report Posted November 30, 2024 Really liked Flowers for Albert, but just lost sight of his music after that, especially the Grateful Dead stuff. Great talent, though. Quote
