I just signed up for BFT 24, my first. I've been poking around the topic to get a handle on how this works and saw your questions. Rooster, if you still want help with distribution, let me know. I'd be happy to lend a hand, especially for the 'odd' locations (I'm in Taipei).

Re normalizing files, I wasn't too happy with Nero's function when I tried it (long ago -- maybe it's improved since then). I've been using something called "WAV File Leveller" -- a free program available at: www.plompy.co.uk/software. It's worked well for me for most situations.

This is my first post, so perhaps it's a good place to say to thanks to all of you. I've been making my way through the archives (time permitting, I'll eventually read it all) -- highly enlightening and great fun. The most recent benefit: A few items I read yesterday led to my playing Coltrane's Sun Ship and an Ayler compilation at breakfast this morning. Really started an otherwise gloomy day off right.

I haven't received BFT 24 yet (my request just went in), but already I want to ask: Is it too early to sign up for 25?

welcome indigo!

The sign-thread up for BFT 25 hasn't opened yet. Usually the sign-up for the next BFT starts just after the discussion on the current BFT has started. Depending on when .:.impossible posts his answers to the second disk of BFT 23, Ubu will start discussion on BFT 24, and I'm sure Rooster will follow with a sign up thread for BFT 25.

My breakfast was a bit tamer with some Shelley Manne.

Question: Would I be taken out and shot for wanting to also include burns of two more discs: a two-hour unreleased live concert that simply has to be heard to be believed???

Sangry, it's that same thing I sent you along with the recent Grachan Moncur big-band promo/burn. Can you confirm how GREAT this thing is, and how much people would want to hear it??

Sorry for the tardy response, but HELL YEAH on this thing that you mention.

Thanks for the guidance and words of welcome. But I have to wonder what I've let myself in for -- I just found the central repository of links to the answers to previous tests -- some challenging stuff in there, including a fair amount of new-to-me material. In any event, though, I'm sure my ears are in for a treat. Looking forward to it.

Dude, what you've let yourself in for will become apparent as time goes by. But by then it will be too late. :g

Seriously, it's all about fun and learning (and if those two are the same for you, so much the better!). Some take the "detective" angle, some the "impressions of the music" angle, but whatever tact anybody takes in these things, they take because it's fun for them to do it that way. But geez, I've learned a TON with every one of them that I've participated in. And on #24, I expect to learn several tons, because I don't have a clue what most of the stuff is! So, fun and learning, that's the object of the game.

That, and free tunes. Can't go wrong with free tunes. ;)

I'll second that emotion. Too often and despite the fact we know that this music we love ain't background music, many of us, yours truly included, tend to listen that way while we're doing other things that need to be done. However, the BFTs force you to stop and listen, and in so doing, much is gained including an even greater appreciation of this musical form as well as enlightenment concerning artists we've known and perhaps taken for granted, as well as about artists we never even knew of before. It indeed is learning and fun combined. :tup

Of course, it's also gratifying when you hear and immediately identify either a genre or artist you've never cared for, and learn that you still feel that way. There should be some consistency in all of this. :D

No problem, just follow my lead. ;)

OK, I've got things narrowed down to just a one-disc BFT (instead of two), and feel it's a stronger disc as a result. Only had to disinclude two tracks I would have liked to -- but I'm sure they'll be on my next BFT (which at this rate, won't be for another two years or so).

Also, I'm still gonna include the unreleased 2-hour (2-disc) concert as well -- so the entire mailing will be three discs total.

I'm very eager to hear this one - I love unreleased live stuff.

I wonder how long before we start sending out BFT DVDs?

Judging from these comments, you will do well here, welcome to the club, and never be afraid to ask the same dumb question we all have, but most do not have the courage to ask ... ;)

I don't know if I'll be able to teach you any, but... it was my intention that folks don't have a clue on lots of the music... open your easr, listen, and tell me what you like and whatnot etc (as soon as the thread's there).

Same to indigo: no need to play the identification game - just discuss the music, I'm more interested in that, anyway!

Oh, and not to be indiscreet, Jim, but indigo ain't no "dude" ;)

Rats! If only i'd checked in earlier and seen the "dude" remark, ubu, I would have PMed you and suggested not saying anything. It would have been fun to be gender-unknown for a while and see if and when it ever became an issue. Well, no harm done.

I do appreciate the encouragement you all have offered. Yeah, the fun and learning and -- yes!, by all means -- free tunes were what drew me in. But it also appears a bit intimidating to this untutored listener. Just after my 8th grade music teacher had laid out bass and treble clef for the class, I had to have some wisdom teeth extracted, and my music education never got back on track. Now -- decades later -- I'm trying to remedy that. Seems i've come to the right place. Whether i can discipline my ears properly remains to be seen. Occasionally I set out to focus on some aspect of a tune, but I don't think I've managed to go for more than a minute or two before being taken in by the music as a whole.

Marty, your comment about confirming one's dislikes made me laugh. I don't care so much about being consistent, but I'm relieved when I don't have to add something else to the ever-growing wow-I-really-need-to-explore-this list. Not enough ears, not enough hours (or money) for all of it. Hmmmm ... so why did I just sign up for a package of new discoveries? How's that for a dumb question?!

So she tells you... :g

Seriously - I don't give a hoot one way or the other. indigo seems to be bright, open-minded, articulate, musically curious, and good-humored. A no-more-information-needed winning combination if you ask me!

Uh, I'm sorry! Hope you're not mad at me  -_-

No, not at all. :) I had no plan to be "genderless." It's just that the "dude" remark made me wonder what effect it would have if I and perhaps some others were to avoid identifying our genders.

I'm sorry I spoilt that bit of fun - would have been fun for me, too, being "in the know"...

Now, this has me wondering. Is there any "familiar" generic term of address that a guy can use to a woman that doesn't seem disrespectful and/or comeon-ish? I mean, guys can call each other "dude" w/o anything more being taken from it than, hey, we're cool w/each other, check it outetc. "Dude-ette" is just too silly, "Babe" can easily raise hackles (understandably so), "m'am" is not even familiar (nor is "Miss"), "Lady" is cool if you're a cab driver (but I'm not)and "Ethel" only works if the person in question is actually named that.

If it were up to me, "dude" would become a non-gender-specific term, but it ain't up to me. So what're the options here, anyway? I'm stumped!

Like, dig, I'm in step

When it was hip to be hep, I was hep

I don't blow but I'm a fan

Look at me swing - ring a ding ding

I even call my girlfriend "man"

'cause I'm hip

Mike

So waht are you saying, that I should start calling everybody "Dave Frishberg"?

Ah, Blossom Dearie vocal by way of Dave Frishberg. Great lyric!

Seriously though, Sangrey raises an interesting point. While women can use the term "girl" with each other as in "you go, girl", it can be construed as paternalistic coming from a guy. "Gal" is antiquated. "Chick" is a no-no, too sexist. I'm stumped.

as i understand it, it is in some circles, especially if written as "d00d. (pl, d00dz).' commonly used that way by script kiddies and other hacker wannabes. not being one of them and not frequenting IRCs, i can't say from personal experience, but i've seen plenty of references to the practice while reading geek news.

having lived in non-english-speaking countries for the last 20 years, i often have to ask for guidance about such matters when i go back to the states for a visit. so i don't have any real answers, and i doubt there's a good one other than using the person's name.

as far as i'm concerned, 'man' is fine. but it doesn't solve the problem -- it's an ejaculation (pun unavoidable -- n., an abrupt emphatic exclamation expressing emotion) and not a term of address. ('man, indigo, that was an amazing story.') personally, i have no problem with 'guys' in the plural, used among familiars -- most american women i know use it that way among themselves. but i don't have a good answer as to what to use in the singular. in a restaurant how should one get the attention of the person who brings the food? 'oh, waitperson!" sounds ridiculous, and 'server!' conjures an image of a central computer. i suppose that's why they often introduce themselves, using their first names, which strikes me as overly familiar.

anyway, i'm cool with dude or man. 'babe' might work if there were a lou reed smilie with audio (doo duh-doo duh-doo ....).
