Hardbopjazz Posted February 16, 2005 Report Posted February 16, 2005 I just bought a new entertainment wall unit. I decided to get new speakers to match. I went to Best Buy, but all the speakers are small. Some a little larger then P external speakers. I’m so use to the massive size speakers. The sales person said speakers have gotten smaller, and the old large speakers are a thing of the past. My wife liked the idea that they were small. I have two questions. Do they produce the same sound quality as the bigger units. Is it true they don't make the larger speakers anymore? Quote
Stefan Wood Posted February 16, 2005 Report Posted February 16, 2005 (edited) A number of companies make tower speakers -- they haven't disappeared at all. Smaller speakers, or bookshelf speakers, sound really good as well, depending on the manufacturer. I have a pair of Mirage speakers that I have hooked up to my tube amp and they sound great. You have to consider the space that they are going into -- big tower speakers may not be the right solution if they are going into a small or even medium sized room. What places like Best Buy or Circuit City are selling now are surround sound systems for home movie stuff. They're not into the quality audio hi fi set up. RDK Posted February 16, 2005 Report Posted February 16, 2005 Stay away from Best Buy for speakers! If you're looking for decent "mainstream" speakers (ones that you can easily find outside of audiophile stores), you might check out the Polks or Klipsch that are available at Circuit City and Good Guys. I'm rather fond of Polks for the price, though obviously you can do better for more money. Quote
wesbed Posted February 16, 2005 Report Posted February 16, 2005 My friend has a pair of Paradigm speakers. I want to steal them away from her. Quote
Ron S Posted February 16, 2005 Report Posted February 16, 2005 I have a pair of NHT SB-3 speakers. These are phenomenal bookshelf speakers that have incredible bass response for their size--down to 39Hz, which is lower than many towers! Also, they're acoustic suspension and not bass reflex (no reflex port), so the bass is really tight even with that incredible range. They've gotten some great reviews. They're not cheap (list at $600/pr., I paid about $450), but give great sound for the size--meaning they pass the Wife Test when larger speakers may not. You can read more about them on the Audio Advisor (great high-end audio net dealer) site located here. And here is NHT's SB-3 page. Quote
Eric Posted February 16, 2005 Report Posted February 16, 2005 (edited) I bought my girlfriend a pair of Paradigm bookshelf speakers that ran about $250 and they sound great. Avoid Best Buy like the plauge. Edited February 16, 2005 by Eric Quote
sal Posted February 16, 2005 Report Posted February 16, 2005 I bought a set of Infinity bookshelf speakers a couple years back and they sound mighty fine. Quote
Dr. Rat Posted February 16, 2005 Report Posted February 16, 2005 There's a small Canadian Company called Axiom who make nice small speakers, I think. I have a set in my on-air studio, and they've held up for 2 years of being on 18-20 hours a day and still sound good. The speakers got a lot of good press from a wide variety of sources a couple of years ago. Axiom --eric Quote
.:.impossible Posted February 17, 2005 Report Posted February 17, 2005 I bought a pair of these Wharfedale Emerald 93 speakers two years ago, and love them. I think I paid $250.00 for them through amazon.com. I don't think they are available through that route any more, but would highly recommend them for that price! They are larger than bookshelf and most monitor speakers. A good size with a good range. Quote
.:.impossible Posted February 17, 2005 Report Posted February 17, 2005 and really nice to look at! Quote
