mjzee Posted February 16, 2005 Report Posted February 16, 2005 What was the first session that Benny Golson's composition "Whisper Not" appeared on? Quote
Dan Gould Posted February 16, 2005 Report Posted February 16, 2005 I'm probably wrong, but something tells me its the Lee Morgan date that is on the Mosaic. Sorry its not much help and I'm probably wrong anyway. But someone will be along with the answer .... Quote
Jim R Posted February 16, 2005 Report Posted February 16, 2005 Earliest I have is what Dan mentions: Lee Morgan Sextet / Vol. 2 (Blue Note BLP 1541). Recorded Hackensack, N.J., Dec. 2, 1956 Lee Morgan trumpet Kenny Rogers alto sax Hank Mobley tenor sax Horace Silver piano Paul Chambers bass Charlie Persip drums Benny Golson arranger Quote
Jim R Posted February 16, 2005 Report Posted February 16, 2005 BTW, on the CD album cover (front and back) it's "Kenny Rodgers", while in the BN discography, it's "Kenny Rogers" (both on the page where this date is listed, as well as in the artists index). I must admit, I'm not sure which is correct... Quote
Dan Gould Posted February 16, 2005 Report Posted February 16, 2005 B-) You know, I thought that the liners made a reference to the song as if it were something new. Who knew it would become such a popular standard? Quote
Brad Posted February 16, 2005 Report Posted February 16, 2005 From my research that looks correct. A close second might be on Birks Works from 1957. Quote

bertrand Posted February 16, 2005 Report Posted February 16, 2005 Which record was first made available to the general public? Bertrand. Quote
MartyJazz Posted February 16, 2005 Report Posted February 16, 2005 From my research that looks correct. A close second might be on Birks Works from 1957. Actually, I think the closest second is a version Thad Jones did 10 days after Lee's (i.e., 12/12/56) on a Fresh Sound release I have titled MAD THAD. Quote
P.D. Posted February 16, 2005 Report Posted February 16, 2005 looking through the discographies.. the first was a broadcast recording by Diz ftom Birdland.. given as "probably" Dec 1 1956 The Morgan is given as Dec 2 '56 and is most likely the first studio recording Quote
ghost of miles Posted February 16, 2005 Report Posted February 16, 2005 Isn't the first-ever version of "I Remember Clifford" on the Morgan Mosaic as well? Quote
brownie Posted February 16, 2005 Report Posted February 16, 2005 Benny Golson completed the composition of 'I Remember Clifford' in February 1957. Lee Morgan recorded it on his third BN album (with Gigi Gryce and Golson) the following month. Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted February 16, 2005 Report Posted February 16, 2005 Not true. The first recording of I Remember Clifford is by the Donald Byrd/Gigi Gryce Jazz Lab from January 13, 1957 (Columbia). For those keeping score, Gryce also had the recorded premiere of Golson's Blues March in June 1958. Mike Quote
