Kevin Bresnahan Posted February 23, 2005 Report Posted February 23, 2005 Well, I might just give up on this. I see now where there's a thread started over on the Steve Hoffman forum too. It's probably gonna get crazy to get one of these now with all the people looking at it. Oh well, saved myself $99. Later, Kevin Quote
Tjazz Posted February 24, 2005 Report Posted February 24, 2005 Steve's forum doesn't have very many hard-core jazz fans. Quote

Brad Posted February 24, 2005 Report Posted February 24, 2005 Weizen, I thought it was you a while ago who said that he didn't like this box (or do I have that wrong?). Quote
Son-of-a-Weizen Posted February 24, 2005 Report Posted February 24, 2005 I was watching the screen for a couple of minutes when my 9-year-old wandered in to say 'goodnite'. When she turned to leave I clicked refresh and suddenly the Evans and Brownie were both sitting there -- and I nailed 'em both. I then went into the kids room to tell the eldest that she'd brought good luck....and after babbling on about 'refresh', 'box sets' 'Evans' and 'buy it now' for 15 seconds she looked over and said: 'Dad, we don't even know what you're talking about" Brad, see what happens when you don't listen to the little 'Buy or Die' man? He puts a hex on you. Quote

Free For All Posted February 24, 2005 Report Posted February 24, 2005 (edited) One thing I've been wondering, and forgive me if this has been discussed, but if the rusty box issue is a problem, wouldn't it be possible to somehow seal the metal with something? Obviously you'd have to remove the existing rust first, but isn't there some horribly caustic sealant-type product that would halt the process? What an idiotic idea for packaging such important music. I really don't want to get tetanus from my CDs. Edited February 24, 2005 by Free For All Quote
Pete B Posted February 24, 2005 Report Posted February 24, 2005 I'm gonna hit up the hardware for a can of clear (#1077). Quote
Hiptobird Posted February 24, 2005 Report Posted February 24, 2005 Does anyone know if the rust on this box-set causes damage to the discs within? Quote
Brad Posted February 24, 2005 Report Posted February 24, 2005 They're also running the same deal at the same price for the Brownie EmArcy box set, which saves about $30 (not bad), but nothing compared to the Bill Evans set which sells for $246 on CD Universe. Quote

I have found the Clifford Brown set in used bins for less than $99. In fact, I once found a sealed box in a "used" bin for $80. I have never seen the Evans set for anything less than $150. etherbored Posted February 24, 2005 Report Posted February 24, 2005 Does anyone know if the rust on this box-set causes damage to the discs within? yes, often it does. the rust can become quite aggressive and spread through the second layer of metal that the magazine which holds the discs is made from and attack the discs directly after it wreaks havoc on the protective paper sleeves. a friend of mine in the northeast claims that a quarter of his box has now been rendered unplayable after a winter in his garage... cavaet emptor, -e- Quote
ghost of miles Posted February 24, 2005 Report Posted February 24, 2005 (1) I'd advise anyone getting this box to store the CDs and the book anywhere but in the box itself. (2) In any case, don't go storin' no CDs in no garage! Quote
Brad Posted February 24, 2005 Report Posted February 24, 2005 Maybe that's why these sets are $99. They can't sell 'em to retailers with that condition so they figure they'll sell it on ebay for a cutrate price. Still, not a bad deal. Quote
Son-of-a-Weizen Posted February 24, 2005 Report Posted February 24, 2005 If mine arrives w/o rust, I'll just put it in some sort of clear plastic pouch along with one of these desiccant jobbers that I've got lying around. They're cheap, easy to use & work quite well. Quote
etherbored Posted February 24, 2005 Report Posted February 24, 2005 you can run but you can't hide from The Rust. it's gonna get ya! -e- Quote
