Hardbopjazz Posted February 11, 2005 Report Posted February 11, 2005 (edited) Out of the thousands of photos taken of jazz artists, which one stands out for you as beeing the ultimate? Myself, even though it may not come close for anyone else, it's the photo of Charlie Parker and a very young John Coltrane. I believe it is in the Verve booklet to the complete Charlie Parker on Verve. Edited February 11, 2005 by Hardbopjazz Quote
Dave James Posted February 11, 2005 Report Posted February 11, 2005 That's an easy one. Herman Leonard's photo of a young Dexter Gordon. The one with the cigarette smoke curling all around him. Up over and out. Quote
JSngry Posted February 11, 2005 Report Posted February 11, 2005 There's a Valerie Wilmer photo of a looking-about-twice-as-old-and-broke-down-as-he-already-was Don Byas weakly grinning and holding up a shot glass that's pretty arresting. Quote
tonym Posted February 11, 2005 Report Posted February 11, 2005 Possibly for me (it's waaay too difficult obviously to narrow it down to one) the strongest contender has to be the one of Getz, Tommy Potter and Al Haig, playing at Birdland, by Hermann Leonard. Quote
AllenLowe Posted February 11, 2005 Report Posted February 11, 2005 wow - love that Gottlieb - is it published anywhere? Quote
Jazz Kat Posted February 11, 2005 Report Posted February 11, 2005 I love when Wolf got pictures of drummers with the whole kit in the pic. Quote
John B Posted February 11, 2005 Report Posted February 11, 2005 I don't know about "ultimate," but the photo of Louis Armstrong in the Swiss Kriss ad is certainly one of the most unusual. Quote
A. Kingstone Posted February 11, 2005 Report Posted February 11, 2005 I like the one with Bird, Monk, Mingus and Haynes. Bird in white. A voluptuous mural in the background. Quote
doubleM Posted February 11, 2005 Report Posted February 11, 2005 That's too easy. It's the one of a smiling Kenny G on his album "Breathless". I'm sure you all know which one I'm talking about. . No, seriously...I really like the one of Donald Byrd playing his axe on a subway train, by Wm. Claxton. There are simply too many to have to choose a fave, though. Quote
Jazzmoose Posted February 11, 2005 Report Posted February 11, 2005 Well, the best photo that was is of course the no longer existing photo of a proud Buddy Bolden holding up his just recorded cylinder... Quote
jazzbo Posted February 11, 2005 Report Posted February 11, 2005 Good one Mark. One of my very favorites is one of Bird at the Roost with Eager behind him grooving to the sound. My wife gave me a large poster of this as one of her first gifts to me. I look at it every day on the wall of my listening room/library. Quote
Jazz Kat Posted February 11, 2005 Report Posted February 11, 2005 The Cover of Showcase, by Philly Joe. Quote
jazzbo Posted February 11, 2005 Report Posted February 11, 2005 I've always liked this one too. Seems to just oooooozzze the good old jazz stuff! Quote
Ron S Posted February 11, 2005 Report Posted February 11, 2005 I've always liked this one too. Seems to just oooooozzze the good old jazz stuff! But sort of weird mike placement, don't you think? Quote
couw Posted February 11, 2005 Report Posted February 11, 2005 I've always liked this one too. Seems to just oooooozzze the good old jazz stuff! But sort of weird mike placement, don't you think? looks like Gulliver's Island Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted February 11, 2005 Report Posted February 11, 2005 I've loved this Herb Snitzer shot from the Vanguard since I first saw it in Down Beat around 1962. Quote
Jim R Posted February 11, 2005 Report Posted February 11, 2005 One of my very favorites is one of Bird at the Roost with Eager behind him grooving to the sound. I couldn't name just one either, but this reminds me- I love the shot (would have to look up who took it) of Ella with Goodman and Ellington watching her from the audience. Quote
sidewinder Posted February 11, 2005 Report Posted February 11, 2005 (edited) Any of the Francis Wolff photos of Hank Mobley really but the one on the front cover of the 'Straight No Filter' LP and the one inside the 'Turnaround' RVG CD are probably my particular favourites. The one of Wayne Shorter on the cover of 'The All Seeing Eye' is also pretty damn great. Edited February 11, 2005 by sidewinder Quote
Jazz Kat Posted February 12, 2005 Report Posted February 12, 2005 lol, I think they're getting the band as a whole... Quote
Neal Pomea Posted February 12, 2005 Report Posted February 12, 2005 This one's pretty good. That's Stuff Smith right in the middle of the front row. Oscar Pettiford two men to the right, with the light jacket. Quote
Jazzmoose Posted February 12, 2005 Report Posted February 12, 2005 Wow...I thought Stuff Smith was older than that... Quote
Free For All Posted February 12, 2005 Report Posted February 12, 2005 I've always liked this one...... Quote
