Verve currently has this one slated for release on September 20, 2005.

How many discs will it be? Anyone here in-the-know? I hope the projected date of reissue pulls through this time. Really looking forward to hearing the music.

Wasn't this scheduled for Sept. 2004?

Yes. It got bumped back for reasons that I can't now remember. Estate-related difficulties?

I thought it might be more than 2 discs, but I certainly won't complain. I do hope Verve doesn't get too fancy with its packaging ... :alien: .

don't know, but I think Ravi talks about this as one of his "current projects" in the latest issue of JazzTimes (which has a shelf-life of about two hours in my house, surprised I caught that much) ...

There's one other session, with a monster version of "One Down, One Up" and another tune I can't remember offhand. Off the tunes you listed "Untitled Original", aka "Creation" is the jewel of the bunch. Though the live version of "Song of Praise" is also incredible.

No... this isn't the gig I'm talking about. There's a Half Note broadcast from two days earlier:

Date: 26 March 1965.

Place: Half Note, New York City, NY.

Ensemble: John Coltrane Quartet: John Coltrane soprano sax, tenor sax, McCoy Tyner piano, Jimmy Garrison bass, Elvin Jones drums,

Recording: Private tape, radio broadcast.

Recording Engineer:

Alternative Issues:

Recent Available Issue:

1. One Up, One Down (14:28) (Incomplete.) (Unissued.)

    Announcement (1:20)

2. Afro Blue (10:16) (Incomplete.) (Unissued.)

3. One Up, One Down (?:??) (Incomplete.) (Unissued.)

4. Afro Blue (?:??) (Incomplete.) (Unissued.)

Notes: This recently discovered session, referred to by Porter 1998, p. 372, who considers the above date the probable one for this recording.

The first three tracks on the CD-R of this recording had all but no sound on the right channel, most of the way through. Using computer soft this was boosted whereupon substantially more information became apparent in that track, equal that of the left. The first 0:35, begins with the show’s theme tune, and voice over of the presenter, Alan Grant, who then states that it is time to return to Jimmy Garrison. The theme is faded out after 0:14, when Jimmy Garrison’s bass solo can be heard fading in the background, with the voiceover continuing to introduce the broadcast and the musicians. The bass solo continues until 1:51, at very low volume, indeed dropping out almost completely around 1:49 on the left channel, when the volume suddenly increases and the solo becomes, bass drum duet. This duet continues until 2:13, when Coltrane joins in. However, when the level for both tracks, for the first 1:51 were boosted it is apparent that the bass solo comes in after 0:04. The piece ends at 14:30 with the announcement of John Coltrane, when the track ends at 14:32. There is a new track for the next announcements, similarly the right channel has only the barest of information, boosting of that brings it back. The announcer states:

“I, I, I want my listeners to know, because I think that it is important, because we went on the air at 11:15 and this tune started at twenty minutes before eleven, and it is fifteen minutes before we had a station break, it is WABC FM at 99.5 on your dial, and this is Alan Grant presenting Portraits in Jazz. John Coltrane will be appear here up until.. through April the 4th… How about a big hand for John Coltrane, John Coltrane (shortly after which there is a brief sound of some sax noodling)….”

Hope RVG does the work here on these. . . just my personal little hope.

If it'd be anything like his work on the Love Supreme set, that would be my hope too. Some of Rudy's best-ever remastering work, in my opinion.

Is that session on the Coltrane-list tree? In any case, I hope this set streets for real this time around.

The 3/26 version of "One Down One Up" is absolutely killer (as Guy mentioned). The Half Note material is right up there with my favorite Coltrane. I have it on four individual CD's, but if I did the math correctly it looks like you could shuffle the sets around and squeeze it all onto two CD's. I hope Verve does the right thing and releases this material in its entirety.
