medjuck Posted February 10, 2005 Report Posted February 10, 2005 Anyone have discographical information about Charles's pre-Atlanatic sides? I've got all 43 of them (I think that's all there were), the first 21 on a Classics cd with pretty good info. (I notice they actually spell Chronological correctly on the Blues series.) But the information I have for the last 22 sides he cut before joining Atlantic is pretty skimpy. I can't even figure out all the titles. Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted February 10, 2005 Report Posted February 10, 2005 Looks to me like there are more than 43. Perhaps you could list what you've got. Mike Quote
JSngry Posted February 10, 2005 Report Posted February 10, 2005 I've got this one on the way: http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?...yle=music&Bab=E We'll see what it has and how well it's annotated. Quote

JSngry Posted February 10, 2005 Report Posted February 10, 2005 That set arrived today, and has discographical info. It also has but 41 cuts. Bummer... Gotta go to work now, but I'll try to get here tomorrow and post the full details, unless somebody beats me to it. Quote

Back Home This is the track listing from the Ebony issue, a Fresh Sound sublabel - they were the first to do a definite edition, with an extensive booklet and the story of the many bootlegs and edits. Jordi Pujol's greatest production job, IMO. I bet the edition you ordered, Jim, is copped from the Ebony. Go here and click on "The Birth of a Legend". Quote
jazzbo Posted February 10, 2005 Report Posted February 10, 2005 Yeah, I had that but think the Night Train sounds better . . . to my ears on my system. Great music! Quote
AllenLowe Posted February 10, 2005 Report Posted February 10, 2005 the early stuff is on Swingtime, which did put out a boxed set some years ago that had a fair amount of Charles - there are also some Charley-issued CDs that are OK - Quote
jazzbo Posted February 10, 2005 Report Posted February 10, 2005 Swingtime. . . and Downbeat too. (Same outfit?) Quote
mikeweil Posted February 11, 2005 Report Posted February 11, 2005 Yes, basically the same label owned by the same people. Quote
Jazz Kat Posted February 11, 2005 Report Posted February 11, 2005 Does anyone know where I can find "Mess Around?" Quote
medjuck Posted February 11, 2005 Author Report Posted February 11, 2005 There are only 41 cuts, all others are faked by editing: Yes, "Ray's Blue's" is from "Baby I Want to Hold Your Hand" but I can't figure out where "Going Away Blues" is from. Quote
Alexander Posted February 11, 2005 Report Posted February 11, 2005 Does anyone know where I can find "Mess Around?" I know that as an Atlantic recording, which I have on the box set. Did he record another version for a different lable? Quote
Jazz Kat Posted February 12, 2005 Report Posted February 12, 2005 Don't know. All I know is they featured it on PLanes Trains And Automobiles, (1987) and I never ever heard the song, being played or being mentioned ever! I mean ever! Quote
Alexander Posted February 12, 2005 Report Posted February 12, 2005 Don't know. All I know is they featured it on PLanes Trains And Automobiles, (1987) and I never ever heard the song, being played or being mentioned ever! I mean ever! The song "The Mess Around" was recorded for Atlantic Records and is available on the three CD complete Atlantic R&B Recordings box set. It can be had for just $15.99 from BMG, when last I checked. Since every recording Charles cut for Atlantic is a classic, this is a must have. Quote
Jazz Kat Posted February 12, 2005 Report Posted February 12, 2005 Right now, I would really just love to hear that song. Maybe I will invest in that. Quote
medjuck Posted February 12, 2005 Author Report Posted February 12, 2005 You should buy the set, but meanwhile you can get Mess Around from the I-tunes Music Store. Quote
