vibes Posted February 10, 2005 Report Posted February 10, 2005 "Flamingo" is one of my favorites. A beautiful ballad. Quote
jasonguthartz Posted February 10, 2005 Report Posted February 10, 2005 Can't say I'm familiar with his entire oevre, but "Judo Mambo" from New Sound/New Star: At the Organ v.1-3 kicks my ass. -Jason "In Japan, I'm a God. They worship me, man. They'll cut your ass all over the place if you talk about Jimmy Smith." --Jimmy Smith Quote
kinuta Posted February 10, 2005 Report Posted February 10, 2005 Don't know how you can list faves by JS. Everything he did was great, period. The first time I heard him( on discs) was around 1962 and my musical sensibility changed for ever. Quote

Stefan Wood Posted February 10, 2005 Report Posted February 10, 2005 It isn't Jimmy Smith's greatest achievment, but I have always liked the Peter and the Wolf album. I just keep going back to it when I want to listen to his music and I find it enjoyable. Nothing more, nothing less. But for grease it is either Prayer Meeting or Back at the Chicken Shack. Quote
Big Al Posted February 10, 2005 Report Posted February 10, 2005 As of this morning when WKCR played it, I have got to get DAMN! 'bout turned the office into a party zone! Quote
Man with the Golden Arm Posted February 10, 2005 Report Posted February 10, 2005 "Beggar for the Blues" - Jimmy confessin' with the trio from Bashin'. Quote

couw Posted February 10, 2005 Report Posted February 10, 2005 WOW!!!!!!!!! Thanks couw!!! thank prince serendip Quote
Alon Marcus Posted February 10, 2005 Report Posted February 10, 2005 "Mellow Mood" with Wes and Grady Tate is one of my personal favorites ever as I mentioned a few times before. I like very much both albums with Wes in general. Quote
Big Wheel Posted February 10, 2005 Report Posted February 10, 2005 Just was listening to "Down By The Riverside" off the Dynamic Duo record with Wes (they were playing it on the Wkcr tribute).... anyway...Jimmy's BURNING on this thing. Flying, runs like you wouldn't believe. I'm thinking, oh Jimmy's really burning this F shuffle up! Then I check the key...he was burning it up in Eflat!!!! Maybe only another organist could appreciate this, but to burn the blues in Eflat like that on organ hasn't been done that much. Especially by Jimmy, his blues were almost always in F, G, C...Bflat was rare with him on a shuffle....but Eflat? No doubt that man could swing in Bnatural and you'd never guess. Pure genius. Is Jimmy kicking bass on this one, though? I thought there was a bass player, at least on this track. Quote
rostasi Posted March 2, 2005 Report Posted March 2, 2005 When Johnny Comes Marching Home from CRAZY! BABY. AMEN --- Now playing: Jimmy Smith - When Johnny Comes Marching Home Quote
Big Al Posted March 2, 2005 Report Posted March 2, 2005 I’ll echo Mike Fitzgerald’s remarks about the Mosaic set. Especially the all-star jam of February 11, 1957. Blakey, Hank, Poppa Lou, Byrd, Monsieur McFadden (as Babs Gonzales calls him) and the Master just KILLIN’ for seventy-five solid minutes! Groovy music for cruisin’ down the highway on a Sunday afternoon (or any other day for that matter, but especially Sundays!) Quote

But, it doesn't diminish the sheer awe of what Jimmy's up to here. Matter of fact, I think it's actually harder to swing like this and be this "in the pocket" when you aren't playing organ bass at the same time. Playing bass yourself really locks you in rhythmically. Quote
Big Al Posted March 19, 2005 Report Posted March 19, 2005 As of this morning when WKCR played it, I have got to get DAMN! 'bout turned the office into a party zone! Picked this up yesterday and all I can say is..... DAMN!!!!!! I was reading the liners to this and didn't realize that this was Art Taylor's final session before he passed away less than two weeks later! How eerie is this: Taylor's passing was a little over ten years to the day before Smiths! Taylor passed away 2/6/95; Smith on 2/17/05. God rest 'em both! Quote
