Big Al Posted February 9, 2005 Report Posted February 9, 2005 This is the sad state of jazz (and music) in general: a frickin' legend passes away, yet a cursory search on Yahoo brings us the news that the drummer for the Doobie Brothers died today. Un-fucking-believable!!! Quote

Indestructible! Posted February 9, 2005 Report Posted February 9, 2005 I knew this day would come soon, since the last time I saw him he was in rough, rough shape... but it still hurts like hell. R.I.P. Jimmy, and know your music made this world a better place! Quote
Soul Stream Posted February 9, 2005 Report Posted February 9, 2005 Together again. uhhh...that's not jimmy. Quote
chris olivarez Posted February 9, 2005 Report Posted February 9, 2005 Together again. uhhh...that's not jimmy. I right clicked the picture and the guy over the key board apparently is Jimmy Smith. The picture was identified as "Wes and Jim". Quote
Lazaro Vega Posted February 9, 2005 Report Posted February 9, 2005 James Oscar you are in our prayers. "The Sermon" "The Duel" "Oh, No, Babe" Three faves. To quote a recent album title, "Damn!" "Drinks! Drinks for all my friends!" Line exclaimed while Smith's "The Sermon" played in the sound track to "Bar Fly." Old friends from Detroit told tales of Smith at the Bluebird wringing wet, lost in the ecstacy of jazz performance taking the towel from around his neck and at the height of frenzy snapping it at the keyboard, "Whap!" "Whap, eeek! Thwack" then jumping back on board like James Bond getting behind the wheel of a moving boat in some crazy scene on the Detroit River to light up a blues run down the length of the keys, then grabbing that Ivory beast by the throat, making it stand up and exclaim like a preacher saving the world from the doors of hell, all the while kickin' the bass and all that Motor City grime right down the bar room drain..... Now comes the quiet. RIP Mr. Smith. Quote
GloriousBlues Posted February 9, 2005 Report Posted February 9, 2005 Very sad news. Very good reason to play all my Jimmy Smith CDs over the next couple of days. Quote
Guy Berger Posted February 9, 2005 Report Posted February 9, 2005 Wow sad. Back at the Chicken Shack was one of the very first BNs in my collection, six years ago. Guy Quote
Free For All Posted February 9, 2005 Report Posted February 9, 2005 (edited) Very sad. Another major heavy is gone. RIP BTW, I can't think of any place I'd rather be than here to share our feelings about JS. Edited February 9, 2005 by Free For All Quote
Jim R Posted February 9, 2005 Report Posted February 9, 2005 The very first "real" jazz LP I ever owned... Once I heard that, there was nothing to do but dive in head first. RIP Quote
Randy Twizzle Posted February 9, 2005 Report Posted February 9, 2005 I didn't realize how popular Smith was in the mid-60s until I saw these TV listings from March and October of 1965. I wonder if any recordings of these shows still exist. Quote
Peter Johnson Posted February 9, 2005 Report Posted February 9, 2005 God, what is there to say. Thanks for the music, Jimmy...the band in the sky just got another key player. R.I.P., with tears in my eyes... Quote
ianfaith Posted February 9, 2005 Report Posted February 9, 2005 Listening to Cool Blues right this minute. Man, I hate how we're losing these guys. Inevitable, I know, but it hurts. Rest in peace, Jimmy, and thanks for giving it everything you had for so many years. Quote
brownie Posted February 9, 2005 Report Posted February 9, 2005 The announcement does not seem to be out yet on the regular news sources. Very sad if it's true... Quote

Un-fucking-believable!!! And oh yeah, Ashlee Simpson is "jazzed" about her upcoming tour as the lead story, yet still no mention of Jimmy Smith on Yahoo Entertainment. *shakes head* Quote
RDK Posted February 9, 2005 Report Posted February 9, 2005 Wow. Don't know what to say right now... R.I.P. Jimmy... Quote
