rostasi
What a shame...another great one leaves us. Who's to take his place?
wesbed
Nothing found via a Google News search (yet). Perhaps we're ahead of the public-knowledge-of-jazz curve on the Organissimo forum? If I remember correctly, it took several hours for the major news organizations to catch up to the Organissimo knowledge of Elvin Jones' death. Chuck Nessa
Crap, all this stuff running through my head. If I can sort the crap out, it might be interesting to relate dealings with Jimmy. Maybe not - I'll see. I took off Freddie Roach's Down To Earth and threw on The Sermon. Spontooneous
No report on the AP wire yet. (The AP reported Elvin's death just a couple of hours after we heard it on Organissimo, from Aric.)
GA Russell
Very sad. My first college night club date was to see Jimmy Smith. This was in the fall of '68. At the end of his set, the guitarist and drummer left the stage, and he stayed and said of few words of chatting with the audience. It was a nice touch. CJ Shearn
This is VERY sad for me. Jimmy has been a part of my listening ever since I was a little kid. I guess the recording with Joey D. out next week is his last.

Jazz Kat
Wow, I had no idea he was even still alive. The best organ player in the world, period . More and more are leaving us, this sucks!

RonF
Has anyone confirmed this? The source is a reliable voice in jazz promotion in NYC, currently working the new Joey DeFrancesco with Jimmy Smith CD. She wouldn't blow a false alarm. I must say, I'm surprised that it hasn't hit the wires. Her email arrived around 5 PM eastern.

Jimmy Smith doesn't get any respect for his absolutely enormous contributions not just to jazz but to organ playing, keyboard playing in general, and music as a whole. I hope it's not true. CJ Shearn
we all have wonderful music to remember him by, I hope this new album is as good as Pete Fallico says.
Michael Fitzgerald
In case some weren't aware already, there's a 3-page article on Smith and DeFrancesco in the latest issue of Keyboard magazine. Sadly, not a cover story - the days of that happening are long gone. Mike
