catesta Posted February 28, 2005 Report Posted February 28, 2005 Can't repeat it often enough, this is not about correct guesses oe even first correct guesses, but more about comments on the music. Yes, in my case it's about incorrect guesses. I know the BFT is really about sharing comments on the music, and taking guesses or posting the ones you hit dead on is supposed to be the smallest part of it. However the problem with that for someone like me is, I really struggle and have a difficult time trying to articulate my thoughts. I don't have the same level of knowledge or writing skills as a lot of you guys do, so my posts end up being what they are. "Hey, that's Coleman Hawkins!" "I liked this" or "I didn't like this" I hope everyone understands. Quote
Man with the Golden Arm Posted February 28, 2005 Report Posted February 28, 2005 tsk, tsk, don't go selling yerself so short here. your'e just sandbaggn' for #29 ain'tcha. I too enjoy reading each and every comment posting, whenever it's posted. I even read the threads when I decided to take a time out from a couple of these. All about sharing our love of the art. .:.impossible Posted February 28, 2005 Author Report Posted February 28, 2005 Hey guys! I'm back from an amazing trip to the Rockies. Blue Sky Basin has to be skied/snowboarded to be believed. Glad to see there is still some discussion going! I will post the answers this week. Quote

WTF? Last time I checked I was like #33. Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I better get my ass in gear and find some music. Or I could take a different approach and send out blank cds, then let you guys guess what I was going to put on them. Quote
Jim Dye Posted February 28, 2005 Report Posted February 28, 2005 I'm going to post my guesses for Disc Two first! I am such a slacker. 1. Great groove. That piano sounds out of tune, but I like it. Not Mal, but close. Trumpeter reminds me of Woody, but it ain't him. Another one for my endless list! 2. Prince of Darkness Live, 2nd great 5tet edition. Awesome. 3. Sounds like an Andy tune. Yup. Sure enough! Wow! I know 2 out of the first 3. Thats a record for me! 4. This disc is bound to please all the Organissimo Forums faithful. Grant and Larry, Baby! 5. Weird! Not a clue here. Interesting organ sound. ??!!?? 6. Nice. I know the melody, but can't place it right now. Late night mood. Beautiful track. 7. This has to be a Blue Note side. Probably a lesser know session. It just has that sound. Perfect example of hard bop. Hey! That's Jackie Mac soloing. Great! 8. I feel like I know this as well. Is this Bud? Another winner. This is a really good disc! 9. Not quite sure here. 10. Sounds like a newer recording. Very hip. 11. Oh yes! This is one of my all-time favorite Blue Note sides. Moontrane, baby. I am so glad that this came out as a CD. Ripe for reissue. 12. I got a fever, and the prescription is...MORE ORGAN! 13. Nice larger group. I like it, but don't have a clue. Great listen, impossible! Now, onto disc one! Quote
Big Al Posted March 2, 2005 Report Posted March 2, 2005 Trying to beat the disc two deadline, so the usual cluelessness is once again proudly on display! 1. There comes a point where trumpet-tenor front-lines start to sound alike. This one’s no different. The electric bass makes me wanna say early 70’s, maybe that’s Woody Shaw on trumpet. Date was probably led by the piano player, even though his solo’s quite short. Y’alls guess is as good as, probably better than mine! 2. Herbie’s “Riot” to be sure, first guess would be the Davis Quintet. Don’t really know what to add to that. 3. Boy, does this sound familiar. Sounds like a Hutcherson Blue Note, with Andrew Hill on piano. OH wait, I’ve got it backwards: it’s a Hill Blue Note date with Hutch at the vibes. I’ve got it somewhere (it’s gotta be in the Mosaic), so don’t know the exact album, but that’s my guess. I just wish I could remember the tenor player. One thing’s for sure: I’ve gotta dig it out and listen to it again. I’ve a bad habit of forgetting just how good this stuff is! 4. I envy anyone hearing this marvelous combo for the first time courtesy of this BFT. The string of albums made by Grant Green, Larry Young, and Elvin Jones deserve their own Mosaic Select (heck, I don’t care if they are in print, these albums are just that special). 5. That one just seemed to slip by without ever grabbing me to go along for the ride. 6. Pretty much the same as 5. Sounds as if everyone’s trying to wake up from a nap! 7. Oh, now this one sounds even more familiar than track 3! Aaaargh! Let’s see: sounds like Art Taylor at the drums (love his sound; not all that distinguishable, but completely unmistakable and NO ONE keeps as solid a time as A.T.! What a delight!) Alright, that’s Jackie McLean on alto; either it’s because his sound is also completely identifiable, or I’m just a big Jackie Mac nut. So I’m guessing it’s one of his Blue Note dates (has that RVG sound), but I don’t know which one. One I don’t have, Icantellyouthat! 8. Don’t know what my deal is with the slow songs on this disc on this listening go-round, but this one’s not holding my interest either! 9. This sounds like it’s from Duke’s Piano in the Foreground album. Don’t know the song, though. Just sounds like his kind of piano phrasing. Well, wait a sec: that sounds like Blakey at the skins. Aw heck, I don’t know! 10. Ahhhhhh, some good greeeaze! I do believe this is Brother Jack. I think. Don’t know the song, but I bet if I check my “Prestige Years” disc, I’ll find the answer! NO wait! I know! This is from Grantstand! Yeah! It’s that bonus track on that CD! That’s my final answer! Really! 11. Oh I’m gonna kick myself for not knowing this one, especially since I’ve always loved that tail end of the head that goes “daaah-de-daaaah.” Oh where else have I heard this song? Aaaargh! 12. Already made this guess earlier. Still can’t believe I traded this away ages ago. What the heck was I thinking? 13. Sounds like Wayne Shorter. Has to be. Even sounds pretty recent, like maybe it’s from Alegria. Even after 40 plus years, Shorter’s sound is identifiable now as it was when he was a Jazz Messenger! Another good collection! Thanks .:.impossible! Quote
Big Al Posted March 2, 2005 Report Posted March 2, 2005 13 “Jobim” (Ken Schaphorst) | KEN SCHAPHORST BIG BAND Purple | January 5 & 6, 1998. Solos: Seamus Blake (tenor saxophone), Jamey Haddad (pandiero), Dane Richardson (berimbau), ??? (flugelhorn). Wow! That was a very nice piece, and I'll have to look into Seamus Blake. I like that style and tone. And I am SUCH a sucker for a berimbau! Quote
Big Al Posted March 2, 2005 Report Posted March 2, 2005 Man, if Mingus were alive today and read my comment about track 6..... well, I'm not even so sure he's not gonna rise up out the grave and come whoop my ass anyway! And catesta posted his guesses before I did. What's this world coming to? Quote

mikeweil Posted March 2, 2005 Report Posted March 2, 2005 (edited) Wow! That was a very nice piece, and I'll have to look into Seamus Blake. I like that style and tone. These CDs are all nice - sometimes I find him a bit cerebral - as on a live gig with Joanne Brackeen last year. I like that he knows how to creatively use funky grooves. His name is pronounced "Shemus", BTW. Edited March 2, 2005 by mikeweil Quote
