Every time I see the Grant Green album cover I wonder if the street sign is real. I always thought, if the sign is real, it's somewhere in New York City. Probably somewhere, by chance, near the Blue Note offices. I figured the street sign would be different these days, no longer in the same style as it was then, if it existed at all.

It's interesting to learn the street sign is real and is located in San Francisco. What a find! Thanks for posting the picture.

I was in S.F. in 1995 and tried to take the same picture, but it fucked up: my wife had forgotten to change the film, so all my pictures of San Francisco were superimposed on pictures of Paris!

Isn't the intersection is in the Chinatown district? At least that's what I dimly recall. Who is credited for the photo on the Blue Note album? I doubt Frank Wolff flew all the way out there just to take the picture.

Bertrand.

Can't believe someone hasn't stolen that thing over the years.

Someone probably did. It's not the same sign. Font is different. But very clearly the same address.

Or maybe they just updated the signs over the years. Street sign maintenance and upkeep, y'know!

Regardless, that is one hella cool picture!!! :tup:excited:

Hey, I could'a told you guys about that! You should'a asked. B-)

It's in the neighborhood known as "North Beach", which is adjacent to Chinatown. And (as mentioned) it's also a couple of blocks away from the old Keystone Korner, which was on Vallejo St. between Stockton & Powell. (on the corner of Emery Ln., on the map that Rooster posted)

The sign that used to get stolen all the time was the one at Haight & Ashbury. They have since split them up onto two entirely different sign posts. Unfortunately, I don't think that Grant Green has that same kind of name recognition.

Nevertheless, I suggest we not tell Aric about this...
