chandra Posted February 7, 2005 Report Posted February 7, 2005 I was reading a music industry rag and the following quote caught my attention. Mr. Parker from Sony Music was quoted as saying in relation to their decision to sign John Mayer, "The market we're going for is discerning music buyers who know their music, and they want a quality album, whether it's from a new artist or a well-known singer". I guess, by saying this, he is tacitly admitting to the industry practice of selling crap to those who don't know their music Quote
JSngry Posted February 7, 2005 Report Posted February 7, 2005 Either that, or the bar for being one of the "discerning music buyers who know their music" just got a lot lower... Quote

pryan Posted February 7, 2005 Report Posted February 7, 2005 I guess Sony thinks there's room for another sqaure on their roster. Quote
Jazzmoose Posted February 7, 2005 Report Posted February 7, 2005 "Of course, we'll probably have to settle for bucks from the moronic fools we normally pull in with our twaddle, but what the hell", he continued... Quote
PHILLYQ Posted February 8, 2005 Report Posted February 8, 2005 'We also have to sell to people who don't buy the crap we normally sell', and with that, the marketing guy dislocated his shoulder while patting himself on the back. Sharp eye, Chandra Quote
chris olivarez Posted February 8, 2005 Report Posted February 8, 2005 It's all about what they think will give them the heftiest bottom line. Whether it's someone who they think will be perceived as "hip" or "quality" or if it's a case of trying to clone some other labels artist or whatever it's all about the$. The more the merrier. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted February 8, 2005 Report Posted February 8, 2005 Gone are the days when Columbia would sign Burton Greene as a tax write-off! Quote
