randissimo Posted May 28, 2008 Report Posted May 28, 2008 (edited) I play gigs occasionally with Jeff Haas, a jazz piano player who's dad was Karl Haas, an accomplished pianist and known in classical music circles around the globe from the entertaining and educational music series he did for many years on public radio. "Adventures In Good Music" was an insightful program that helped generations of people better understand and appreciate classical music and the composers.. Jeff Haas leads a very interesting and prolific jazz group featuring arrangements and originals inspired by old Jewish songs and melodies from west and east Europe. flat5 Posted May 28, 2008 Report Posted May 28, 2008 (edited) Burton Greene says: Can you tell the people who are compiling this to add pianist Paul Bley, and David Wertman (a fine bass player based in Florida), Steve Tintweiss-- bassist who I worked with in the 60's and was Albert Ayler's last bass player, Shelly Rusten--drummer I worked with in the 60's and he played a lot with Sam Rivers. And certainly bassist Mark Dresser should be on the list as well as Perry Robinson (his mother was Jewish), and Ira Sullivan who is half Jewish. Aha.. two more.. cellists: Fred Katz (worked with Chico Hamilton), and Joel Freedman who I've worked with and he also recorded and played with Albert Ayler. And what about Bob James, Gato Barbieri and pianist Lowell Davidson? (They could be..?) Thought of one more.. trumpeter Mark Levin. He then adds in three posts: Jay Rosen (drums), Jay Rozen (tuba), Jane Getz (piano), Larry Fishkind, Roberto Haliffi, Bob Meyer (drums), Rozanne Levine (clarinet), Kali Zusann Fasteau (reeds) Annette Peacock (composer, vocals), Marilyn Crispell ?(pianist), 2 trombonists: Michael Zwerin and Glenn Ferris, and of course David Liebman. Add Dave Schnitzer to the list 3 Harvey's: Wainapel (saxophones), Sorgen (drums), Kaiser (saxophones) I've got to stop.. this is becoming an obsession..! Another Harvey! Bassist Harvey Swartz who among others has played with Sheila Jordan and Steve Kuhn. Edited May 28, 2008 by flat5 Quote
AllenLowe Posted May 28, 2008 Report Posted May 28, 2008 maybe we should be asking if there are any jazz musicians who ARE NOT Jewish - Quote
randissimo Posted May 28, 2008 Report Posted May 28, 2008 Let's not forget drummer Richie Goldberg. He was a colorful character on the San Francisco jazz scene until he passed away sometime in the late 80's or early 90's.. He grew up in Texas and was also a rodeo cowboy.. Here's Richie Hangin' out with Sun Ra.. Quote
Larry Kart Posted May 28, 2008 Report Posted May 28, 2008 Let's not forget drummer Richie Goldberg. Funny, he don't look Jewish. Not everyone named Goldberg is. Likewise, not everyone named Cohn (e.g. trumpeter Sonny Cohn). Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted May 29, 2008 Report Posted May 29, 2008 Ritchie Goldberg also worked for Ray Charles. He was on that wonderful live session in Atlanta that produced the classic version of "Drown in my own tears". MG Quote

Shrdlu Posted June 2, 2008 Report Posted June 2, 2008 Dave Brubeck is NOT Jewish. He is a Roman Catholic. Paul Desmond WAS Jewish - it came up in some Brubeck LP liner notes that I read. He was hassled about it on one of the tours. Easy and clear definition of a Jew: a descendant of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Not exactly rocket science. That's what it's really all about, whatever customs might be. As usual, the Scriptures make it completely clear. Quote
