Hardbopjazz Posted February 6, 2005 Report Posted February 6, 2005 Did Eddie Jefferson write the words or was it King Pleasure? Quote
robviti Posted February 6, 2005 Report Posted February 6, 2005 (edited) Eddie Jefferson wrote the lyrics to "Moody's Mood For Love" in 1952, but King Pleasure recorded it first. Edited February 6, 2005 by jazzshrink Quote
mikeweil Posted February 6, 2005 Report Posted February 6, 2005 In his liner notes to the Blue Note CD reissue of the King Pleasure sides for Aladdin, UA etc., Ira Gitler reported that King Pleasure gave credit to Jefferson because he started the practice of vocalese - judging from the topic etc. the lyrics are more like Pleasure's. Jefferson recorded another entirely different set of lyrics some years later. Quote
Guest ariceffron Posted February 6, 2005 Report Posted February 6, 2005 I HATE KING PLEASURE. IM TELLING YOU EVEN IN THE 40S PEOPLE DIDNT DIG HIM. I HAVE AN ALLADIN 78 OF ONE OF HIS SONGS AND IT IS STUPID. IF IT WASNT FOR HIM I BET THERE WOULD HAVE NEVER BEEN THAT AWFUL VOCAL VERSION OF ALL BLUES WHICH IS THE MOST LOATHEFUL SONG IN JAZZ HISTORY Quote

Eddie Jefferson did Trane's Blues - could it be you're talkin'about "Swan Blues" - that's Pleasure's take on Gene Ammons' "Hittin' The Jug"? Quote
JSngry Posted February 7, 2005 Report Posted February 7, 2005 King Pleasure sure got played a lot for somebody people didn't dig... Quote

EKE BBB Posted February 7, 2005 Report Posted February 7, 2005 I HATE KING PLEASURE. IM TELLING YOU EVEN IN THE 40S PEOPLE DIDNT DIG HIM. Who´s that "people" anyway? Quote
JSngry Posted February 7, 2005 Report Posted February 7, 2005 And what's with this "40s" stuff? Fact is- "Moody's Mood" was a HUGE hit, and "Red Top" proved pretty popular as well. And he didn't record at all until 1952, for Prestige. The Alladin date was later. Read all about it here: http://home.earthlink.net/~v1tiger/kpleasure.html Quote
medjuck Posted February 7, 2005 Report Posted February 7, 2005 And now Moody himself sings it. (As does Van Morrison.) Quote
jazzbo Posted February 7, 2005 Report Posted February 7, 2005 As did an American Idol contestant in audition last week, I kid not! He did an okay job actually. Clueless AI lumped him in with another contestant as a "crooner." Not really. The judges gushed at him and sent him on to Hollywood. . . believe it or not! Quote

Clueless AI lumped him in with another contestant as a "crooner." Not really. The judges gushed at him and sent him on to Hollywood. . . believe it or not! Saw that. Didn't think the guy was that good, but at least he tried something different. My impression was that the judges didn't "gush" either but they were looking for someone different too. I'm curious what the kid will do with more pop/idol-like material... Quote
JSngry Posted February 8, 2005 Report Posted February 8, 2005 Well. "Moody's Mood" was a big enough of a hit that it still retains some subliminal/residual crossover appeal, believe it or not. I've done lounge gigs where it gets requested. And R&B gigs. And wedding gigs. Etc. Quote
Noj Posted February 8, 2005 Report Posted February 8, 2005 One of my favorite tracks from RDK's bonus disc. I was singing it in the shower for weeks afterward. Mercifully, I do all my singing in private. Quote
