The Magnificent Goldberg Posted July 22, 2006 Report Posted July 22, 2006 (edited) I asked Bob Porter once and he said it was Lie-tell. I thought it might be helpful to post a list of Johnny's albums (original issues). So here it is. John Patton fans (all of us?) should note that BJP plays electric piano on "Everything must change". I have all but 4 of these - a little bit of a fan, here . "Close enough for jazz" is pretty weak, but he turns in a nice version of "Embraceable you". That's the only Solid State I've got. "Swingin' at the Gate" done at the Village Gate, has more of Johnny's great showmanship on "I'm gonna get that boat", in which he talks about a poor man wanting to get the boat to the big city. And blows into a beer bottle to give the effect of a steamer blowing off. And all over a subtle, tight little groove. What a rap! And what a feeling he conveys. I haven't got the other PJ. If people heard it, "People and love" would suffice to place Johnny among the greats of the vibes. Not only is his playing beyond belief at times, but the album has Butch Cornell on kbds and Marvin Cabell on sax. All that is available at present are the later Jazzlands, the Rivs and the Tubas. marcello Posted July 22, 2006 Report Posted July 22, 2006 One last thing . Most Lytle surnames are pronounced ' Little ' , but I once heard a jazz dj pronounce it , ' Lie-Tell ' . If anyone knows how Johnny was adressed , please do-tell . I've always pronounced it (and have heard others pronounce it) lie-tell. I wonder if the pronunciation may have been given in one of the early liner notes? The fans in the old neighborhood used to pronounce it Liet-el. That's with a soft 't', and you say it fast. He was best heard in a club, kind of one a dimentional player, but he has a good time and showed it on stage. A dying art these days. Quote
Cali Posted July 22, 2006 Report Posted July 22, 2006 I know people who were friends of his. They pronounced his name Lie-tle. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted July 22, 2006 Report Posted July 22, 2006 First time I met Orrin Keepnews I thanked him for the Ernie Henry dates. He said "Really! I always thought he was a lost cause like Johnny Lytle". FWIW Keepnews pronounced it Lie tell, as has everyone else I've heard say the name. Quote

Thanks - guess Amazon.com is gonna get some download business from me. Fortunately, you can get odd things there without having to join and be committed to a regular purchase from e-music. MG Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted July 14, 2008 Report Posted July 14, 2008 A technical point please... When you buy a download from Amazon.com, what happens? I assume you pay for it as usual then they e-mail you a link to the download. Is that how it works? MG Quote

You simply click on the "buy mp3" button either in the song itself or "buy album" for all. Next step is paying and since I have a credit card on file for books and music and such it defaults to that for billing. I simply click to buy and the song begins it's download process and appears on my desktop as an mp3 file ready to do with as I please. I just drag it over to an iTunes playlist and it imports it. Done! Prices are usually .99 and sometimes the shorter the song the lower the price. Plus the bit-rate is upwards of 256k. I downloaded this from emusic and the range of rate varies from 189-215. and cheaper than amazon by a third. Quote

kh1958 Posted February 8, 2009 Report Posted February 8, 2009 I've been enjoying the Muse Moonchild date, from 1991. It's a pretty nice date. It's been recently available from dustygroove for $4.99 (though currently out of stock). Quote
ghost of miles Posted May 10, 2010 Report Posted May 10, 2010 (edited) Didn't realize there was a previous Lytle thread (this one didn't turn up because of the misspelling, evidently), but thought I'd mention here as well that there's an article about Lytle in the new issue of Waxpoetics (#40). Sorry I missed out on that Timmons twofer...I have a feeling it was probably dirt-cheap at one point via Newbury, but their price is now up to $45--a little rich for my blood.
