Mosaic Selects for $11?

Actually, CD piracy is illegal in Malaysia, just as it is in most every other country. There's just some, shall we say, "inefficient" enforcement of the law in this regard. I met a 21-year-old kid there who was basically running his own DVD mafia, paying off customs officers and keeping a truck with all the merchandise waiting at the bottom of the mall where his store was, ready to split if the cops showed up.

What I don't understand is why they would bother to pirate specialty items like Mosaic sets, which don't sell more than a few thousand copies anyway. It makes no sense and I would be surprised if they were even aware of the demand.

Boy! If they are pirating these albums then they need some jazz expert giving them advice ... if you check out their full catalog you will see some very specialized items, and some offerings that would really tax the ingenuity of someone trying to duplicate such things as the Dexter Gordon, Dave Brubeck and Miles Davis boxes .... and why would anyone pirate the already pirated Lonehill Jazz material? I don't even pretend to have an answer to what these people ARE up to, but based on the comments, even the negative ones, their merchandise does seem to be genuine ... so how can they sell those boxes for $11.03? I wish I knew ... it is so tempting to just wade in .. and then wait a year!

I agree the whole thing is unusual. It looks as though they intend to sell $11 per disc, and then when someone orders something and they discover it is a set , then the price is adjusted (one of the Mingus sets and the Sinatra, for example). But someone pointed out that the Selects have been priced that way for 6 months. I'll keep my order open for a little while (it's on a card I was just about to pay off and destroy anyway) just to see what happens.

FWIW, I sent an email to Mosaic to see if they're aware of the situation.

Brad:

You have done well at getting to the bottom of things such as this, with Mosaic, in the past. While it's fun to speculate, thanks for your effort in attempting to learn the truth.

It's probably the least I can do since I was dumb enough to try to take advantage of the situation.

I guess we all did

Perhaps they figure it is safer to rip off little outfits like Mosaic than step on the toes of a Sony, or other larger operation, who could say what the hell and if they wanted to, and spend a few thou on legal fees.

I will repeat what I said above ... I do NOT think that they are "ripping off" anyone in the usual sense of piracy. It would cost far too much money to duplicate all those albums, and the boxes and ancillary material (such production costs are more expensive than actually producing the CDs ... You have to have special dies cut, printing, binding, etc.) ... so the merchandise apparently is the genuine article ... none of the criticisms they received indicate a problem with the product ... mostly non response and late, or no delivery. So .... how do they do it for this price? ... THAT is the mystery ... and if we could get an answer out of Mosaic as to whether they are, in actual fact, selling wholesale to this organization it would go a long way to solving the mystery.

Could they be selling stolen items? Has anyone checked with Mosaic if they've had customers complain of non-receipt of orders, expecially those delivered by regular post? Could this be part of a crime/theft racket?

And yes, there are a number of legit CD manufacturers in Malaysia who are able to reproduce CDs and box sets down to the finest detail if requested, would not discount that. The nagging question is why do it for items that likely have low sales (e.g. Duke DETS, George Lewis' Ice Cream)?

You think they stole 30501 albums?

How many thieves work for them?

10000?

How about 15,000

OK. Maybe I was jumping to conclusions but I've had 4-5 of my orders stolen in the past 3 years, amounting to 25+ discs and a box set or two. Happens too often whenever I use the postal service rather than courier which is traceable. Who knows where the items ended up. ;)

Luckily, the CD companies were nice enough to replace my undelivered items.

Edit: Have e-mailed to meet someone from their company on the pretext of buying items directly. See if I can dig up some information, if they ever respond.

That would be, err, hmm, 2.03 CDs per thief.

I think you're onto something here.

It just might be possible. Hell, even I've managed to steal 2 albums in my life, I think.

Who would have thought?

A global CD-stealing conspiracy.

I'll be damned.

This calls for a drink.

And a healthy dose of Teddy Wilson to go with it.

Cheers! :tup

Here's the response I received from Mosaic this morning:

"It is Malaysian compnay using a web host here in the States. The items at

$11.03 is either a ripoff or will never be sent.

I was going to order one but I clicked on their security certificate and it

expired.

http://www.musicboleh.com/privacy.asp"

I'm not sure what the last paragraph means.

I skipped this thread when it started - saw no reason to expect that Selects for $11 could be legit - but its an interesting thread now that I've read it.

As far as paying for printing, etc., who says, assuming that they will ship and they are pirates, that there will be any packaging at all? Maybe you just get three regular jewel boxes, with xeroxes of the inserts?

Definitely falls under, "if its too good to be true .."
