CJ Shearn Posted February 4, 2005 Report Posted February 4, 2005 wow......... I just placed my order now Quote
Soul Stream Posted February 4, 2005 Report Posted February 4, 2005 don't know if i'll actually get this or not. liked the live one o.k.,,,but doesn't get a lot of play for whatever reasons. i'm more interested in how jimmy sounds, that "black cat" cd they came out with last year made jimmy sound as if he might be sick or weak. wondered if he was faring better these days. CJ Shearn Posted February 4, 2005 Author Report Posted February 4, 2005 Well, I emailed Pete Fallico to get the scoop. Let ya know when I hear from him. Quote
Soul Stream Posted February 4, 2005 Report Posted February 4, 2005 Well, I emailed Pete Fallico to get the scoop. Let ya know when I hear from him. Pete will know that's for sure! (all that said, Jimmy Smith at 50% (if that's the case which I don't know) is still something to gawk at) Quote
CJ Shearn Posted February 4, 2005 Author Report Posted February 4, 2005 he said the record is incredible. According to Pete, Jimmy now lives alone in Arizona now, I wonder if Lola passed, Jimmy is now hooked up a new manager and says he has a new boost in life. Quote

Wonder if that's just a coinsidence. Looking forward to hearing it. Always a curious meeting of the two because it's like listening to Jimmy in 2004 and in 1964 all at the same time. Quote
CJ Shearn Posted February 5, 2005 Author Report Posted February 5, 2005 true, I hope Joey pushed him a bit. Quote
CJ Shearn Posted February 17, 2005 Author Report Posted February 17, 2005 (edited) well, I just got it, and I have to say for me, its a very emotionally touching album, in lieu of Jimmy's passing. Joey plays great, Jimmy plays great too, I feel its some of his best playing in years. Great funky take of "I Got My Mojo Workin" and a Latin "Back at The Chicken Shack" which injects new life into it. Joey does play piano on some cuts, and keyboards (Corcovado) but its tasteful. Free For All Posted February 18, 2005 Report Posted February 18, 2005 I've been enjoying it. It has a certain amount of......oh, what's the word I'm looking for....sounds like PLEEEEEZE.......or CHEEEEZE......or WHEEEEZE.... B-) Joey D sounds good on the piano IMHO. There are some synth strings on the Jobim but they don't create much collateral damage. J.O.S. went out with a bang. Quote
CJ Shearn Posted February 18, 2005 Author Report Posted February 18, 2005 yep. its nice to hear an album where someone was in top form before they died. Quote
CJ Shearn Posted February 19, 2005 Author Report Posted February 19, 2005 anybody else get this? Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted February 19, 2005 Report Posted February 19, 2005 I plan on picking this up soon. Quote
CJ Shearn Posted February 19, 2005 Author Report Posted February 19, 2005 both of them play great, you won't be dissapointed Jim. Jimmy plays a little out on the title track, his solo entrance is classic J.O.S. Quote
catesta Posted February 19, 2005 Report Posted February 19, 2005 XM Radio was playing this while I was driving home lastnight. I heard four of the tracks. "I'll Close My Eyes", "Back at The Chicken Shack", a tune called "Dot Com Blues" and another I didn't get the name of. Joey D sounded great on piano on the track I heard, and while I'm no expert on Jimmy Smith, I think this one will not disappoint those who are. Quote
alankin Posted February 20, 2005 Report Posted February 20, 2005 On it's way here. I missed the memorial jam, but I've been thinking about it. (I noticed that Ocium will be issuing two volumes of early '50s Wild Bill Davis, one of Smith's early inspirations.) Quote
CJ Shearn Posted February 20, 2005 Author Report Posted February 20, 2005 its really an excellent album and way to end a career. Quote
Soulstation1 Posted February 22, 2005 Report Posted February 22, 2005 i picked up this cd yesterday at borders for $20 \ i love the picture of a young joey and jimmy at the b3 i like the bass pedals picture on the back of the cd notice the keyboards on the cover if you turn it a certain way the pictures in the booklet of jimmy makes me sad, he looks kinda frail i like the latin feel on back at the chicken shack pick up the cd today ss1 Quote
CJ Shearn Posted February 23, 2005 Author Report Posted February 23, 2005 I really love Jimmy's solo on the title track. Anyone notice a slight cover design similarity to "Prayer Meetin'" on this disc? Quote
Lazaro Vega Posted February 23, 2005 Report Posted February 23, 2005 Midnight Special, and the chatter that closes the cd. Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted February 23, 2005 Report Posted February 23, 2005 Slightly off topic, but it looks like Joey is selling one of his horns... Joey's trumpet on eBay Quote
Soulstation1 Posted February 23, 2005 Report Posted February 23, 2005 "i'll close my eyes" is really nice ss1 Quote
CJ Shearn Posted February 23, 2005 Author Report Posted February 23, 2005 Joey's trumpet looks just like Miles' Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted February 23, 2005 Report Posted February 23, 2005 Miles gave him a trumpet, but I don't think it's that one. Quote
