AfricaBrass Posted February 4, 2005 Report Posted February 4, 2005 I must admit (as the originator of the non-hijacked thread)... I did find the hijack (and the useful non-hijacked info)... very engaging.... I will say when my computer hit the Mosaic Select Kenny G, it re-booted...!!! (I guess I have trained it well)... I'm leaning toward the Farlow... but wanted to ask your opinions about one other set... Anybody got the Max Roach set???? I used to be into Roachie but I saw him live a few years back with the "Beijng Trio" and it was a DISASTER!!!! I know the Mosaic is his "prime" but that dreadful performance really turned me off.... But I'd love to get feedback about his set... thanks!>>>> (And instead of hijacking my own thread... I'll start another on a related topic... Sorry about your thread. I think you'll like the Farlow. It's funny, I have most of the Clifford Brown and Max Roach material (and LOVE it), but I haven't heard much of the material covered on the Mosaic set. Looking at the musicians on it makes me wish I had a $100 Mosaic gift card. If you can get past that dreadful performance, I think this would be the better set to get (unless you can get that deal on the Farlow set that Ron mentioned). It is #201 vs. Farlow being #224, so it shouldn't be around as long as the Farlow set. Plus you won't have to come up with as much ca$h. Quote
Ron S Posted February 4, 2005 Report Posted February 4, 2005 TRANEMONK DOUBLE ALERT!!! Forget my last post. Amazon.com has the Farlow European Mosaic set for $62.99 with free shipping but, even better, a couple of the Amazon Marketplace merchants have it for $48.09 plus $2.49 shipping. That's $50.58 delivered, compared to $129 delivered from Mosaic! One of the merchants is Caiman.com, and I've had many great experiences with them WHEN they actually have the item in stock. They're showing 8 in stock now. Their stuff is all brand-new, and they even pay return shipping if an item is defective (happened to me once). Here is their listing for the Farlow set, and here is the main Amazon listing. I cancelled my CD Universe order and placed one with Caiman/Amazon. Let us know what you decide to do. Quote
ianfaith Posted February 4, 2005 Report Posted February 4, 2005 Wow. Thanks a ton for the tip Ron S. I lapped that deal up as fast as I saw it. Seven discs of vintage Tal Farlow for under $50? Not a whole lot to think about. Quote
RDK Posted February 4, 2005 Report Posted February 4, 2005 Ray thinks: "Will the guys make fun of me if I admit to having worked for Mr. Welk for several years while in college...?" I think that's really cool! It's a LOT better than the jobs I had in college. I have many happy memories watching the Welk show with my grandparents when I was a child. I figure the joke with the Mosaic covers I'm making is that they're artists that are FAR from their normal fare. Even though I joke about a lot of musicians, I don't have a problem with any of them. I may not enjoy their music but someone does, and that is cool with me. Since we have completely hijacked this thread, any good stories of your time working for the Welk show... Ah, my stories are nowhere near as interesting as working on the Welk show itself. No, I didn't work on the TV show, but I did meet the man now and then. I was actually a tram driver/traffic guard at the Welk Resort down in Escondido, CA. Hardly a sexy or interesting job, but it was fun, I got free meals and theater shows out of it, and it helped pay my way through college. But I did have to deal with a lot of blue-haired old ladies hitting on me! Quote

Ron S Posted February 4, 2005 Report Posted February 4, 2005 Did you ever get to operate the Bubble Machine? Quote
tranemonk Posted February 5, 2005 Author Report Posted February 5, 2005 TRANEMONK ALERT!!! Before you order the Farlow set direct from Mosaic, be aware that the European licensed version (identical to the domestic version except different catalog number and not individually numbered, although still one of the limited edition of 10,000) is available right now as an import at CD Universe for $62.09 plus $2.99 shipping, for a total of $65.08--about HALF the cost if purchased from Mosaic. European Farlow Mosaic at CD Universe Tower.com also has it for slightly more. If I were you, I'd buy this set at CD Universe (which I just did), and spend your Mosaic gift card on something you can't get elsewhere for half the Mosaic price. Okay THANKS TO ALL OF YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And especially Ron S.... I took his advice and coughed up $50 of my own to get the Farlow set.... Holding onto a $100 Mosaic gift card is like holding on to good stock... (only going to get better in time.....) THANKS FOR THE ADVICE ALL ,.... especially Ron!!!!! Quote
tranemonk Posted February 5, 2005 Author Report Posted February 5, 2005 oh... and I'm trusting your word Ron S.... And please don't tell me you were the guy who said there were "Weapons of Mass Destruction" in Iraq.... (or) that you were guy who said "I did NOT have sexual relations with THAT woman, Ms. Lewinsky!!!" aside from that.... thanks... Will let you know when the set arrives... Quote

Ron S Posted February 5, 2005 Report Posted February 5, 2005 Will let you know when the set arrives... Do that. And I'll let you know when MINE arrives. I've dealt with Caiman a lot and, at worst, they're good for an immediate refund if for some reason they don't have what you ordered or it takes too long to ship. In my experience, they'll ship within a couple of days, and email you notification of shipment, if they have it (by media mail so, depending on where you live, it can take a while to get to you). If for some reason they don't ship soon, I can advise you on how to deal with them. Quote
Brad Posted February 5, 2005 Report Posted February 5, 2005 It's incredible that the Farlow import set is selling here. There must be something illegal about it. It's got to be different in some respects. How could Mosaic afford to sell it that cheaply overseas. I'm sure Mosaic wouldn't be too happy if they knew. tranemonk, I have the Roach Mosaic and it's great stuff. It spans quite a few years, from Sonny Rollins to Booker Little, it's hard to go wrong there. Quote
Ron S Posted February 5, 2005 Report Posted February 5, 2005 It's incredible that the Farlow import set is selling here. The thing is Brad, as I mentioned in the European Mosaics thread in this same forum, this particular European set is available from several legit U.S. online merchants (CD Universe, Amazon, Tower) for similarly low prices ($48-67). And, from what I've read in several posts from European members, the European versions of the recent Verve Mosaics (distributed there by Universal) are identical to the U.S. Mosaics except that the catalog number is different (NOT a 2XX-MD-CD number) and the booklets are not individually numbered (although they do indicate that the edition is limited to 10,000). Given that the European Farlow set is the only one now widely available in the U.S., I'm wondering (as I said in the other thread) if maybe it's not selling as well overseas or here as originally anticipated given the commitment to issue 10,000 (compared to, e.g., Mulligan CJB at 7500), leading to the discounted European sets being sold here. It might be a solution for Mosaic that still allows them to maintain the standard price on their site. In any event, I can't imagine that all of these legit vendors (including one--CD Universe--which is in Mosaic's home state of Connecticut) would be selling the European Farlow set in the U.S. at the prices their charging if it violated Mosaic's legal rights. At least not for long. Quote
Brad Posted February 5, 2005 Report Posted February 5, 2005 Well, it sure is weird, that's for sure. I'll have to see what other Mosaics are selling on these retailers. Wonder if the Eldridge is selling that cheap. Quote
Ron S Posted February 5, 2005 Report Posted February 5, 2005 The Farlow was the only one I found looking quickly today. Of course, I only looked for ones I'm interested in, including the Eldridge (and, of course, the wonderful Nabors set ). Quote
ejp626 Posted February 5, 2005 Report Posted February 5, 2005 Tranemonk: I just ordered the Roach set, but it is paired with the Hill Select, so I won't get it for another couple of weeks, so I don't have anything that useful to say now. I don't think you would be disappointed. He's got great sidemen, and it is from a high point of his career (musically speaking, even though he was trying to recover from the loss of Clifford Brown). Ron S Posted February 7, 2005 Report Posted February 7, 2005 For all who are interested (including that New England Patriot Lover tranemonk), Caiman's order-tracking site is now showing that my Tal Farlow European Mosaic set shipped today. Quote
tranemonk Posted February 8, 2005 Author Report Posted February 8, 2005 thanks again to Ron and ALL who gave me advice on this thread... I figured if I was being mentioned in the same breath as a crack addict, it was time to ***t or get off the pot... Due to Ron's Eagle Eyes.... (and the gift card given to be my wife:) I ended up purchasing the Tal Farlow boxed (Import), the Gerald Wilson box and the Andrew Hill Select for a total of $80 out of pocket.... I think that's about as good as it gets.... This should tide me over for a while.... Quote
Ron S Posted February 8, 2005 Report Posted February 8, 2005 Due to Ron's Eagle Eyes You really like to rub it in, don't you (about the Eagles, I mean)??? Actually, I was hoping you'd hang on to that gift card, so we could use it to bet on next year's Super Bowl. Quote
AfricaBrass Posted February 8, 2005 Report Posted February 8, 2005 Tranemonk, That's great! I hope you enjoy them. Quote
