Hardbopjazz Posted February 1, 2005 Report Posted February 1, 2005 (edited) Outside of Bill Hardman and maybe Julian Priester, who else were the main stays in the Messengers at this time? I believe Ronnie Mathews palyed piano, but he was replaced by the first woman messenger, Joanne Brackeen by 1970 or even earlier. Was Lawrence Eveans on bass around this time? There's not much studio work from the band at this time. Edited February 1, 2005 by Hardbopjazz Quote

Rooster_Ties Posted February 1, 2005 Report Posted February 1, 2005 Would have loved to have heard this version of the band... April? 1969... Blakey (of course); Woody Shaw-tpt; Tyrone Washington-tsx; George Cables-p; Scotty Holt-b Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted February 1, 2005 Author Report Posted February 1, 2005 (edited) Does a discography of Joe Henderson exist on the web like the artists on Mike's site? Edited February 1, 2005 by Hardbopjazz Quote

Rooster_Ties Posted February 1, 2005 Report Posted February 1, 2005 (edited) how is that lonehill "jersey blues" album? under shaw's name but i think the lineup is shaw, carlos garnett, cables, holt and blakey. Sound-quality is a couple notches above "it sucks", but the music is truely wonderful. VERY modal, and very hard-driving. Two long cuts, about 20-minutes each. Don't pay a mint for it, but I think it's well worth standard "new CD" prices. Again, warning, the sound-quality is not very good. But the music definitely rises above it -- or at least it did for me. Woody's on fire!!!!! Edited February 1, 2005 by Rooster_Ties Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted February 1, 2005 Report Posted February 1, 2005 A Joe Henderson one has been created using BRIAN but it is not on the web yet. Did you have a specific question? Mike Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted February 1, 2005 Report Posted February 1, 2005 A Joe Henderson one has been created using BRIAN but it is not on the web yet. Did you have a specific question? Mike Wow!! No specific question from me. Just a burning desire to see the thing. Any plans to "publish" it via your website?? And any estimate as to when that might be?? Thanks a bunch!!! Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted February 1, 2005 Report Posted February 1, 2005 There are no plans to put it online as of now. It definitely needs some editing. I did not compile it. Any BRIAN user is welcome to what I myself have entered for Joe Henderson - just about all of his 1960s appearances, the Milestone box, plus various others. Mike Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted February 2, 2005 Author Report Posted February 2, 2005 A Joe Henderson one has been created using BRIAN but it is not on the web yet. Did you have a specific question? Mike I came across two private recordings someone gave me a copy of. I'm trying to figure out the sidemen and a couple of the tunes. The dates are 11/27/86 at Bradley's in NYC and 7/23/93 at San Remo, Italy. I have the musicians figured out but not the set list.h Quote

Issued on Arco CD: 104 – Punjab. (Joe's semi-famous, but little recorded "all girl band" -- no slight intended.)Also, FWIW, I tried to find the other date (7/23/93, Italy), to help ID the sidemen. But it didn't appear in the various trade-lists I've seen from people over the years, or at least not that I can find. Edited February 2, 2005 by Rooster_Ties Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted February 2, 2005 Report Posted February 2, 2005 Full details of the 1986 recording are in my Renee Rosnes discography. It has been suggested that this is not from any club named Bradley's at all, but rather from Europe. Further research is necessary. Mike Quote
Guest ariceffron Posted February 2, 2005 Report Posted February 2, 2005 why do u think joe had a band of all chicks, did it just happen that way or was he trying to make some statement Quote
mikeweil Posted February 4, 2005 Report Posted February 4, 2005 IIRC he wanted to make a statement for women in jazz - I saw that n+band with Rosnes, Cuenca and Kim Clarke on bass - excellent players all. Quote

Rooster_Ties Posted February 4, 2005 Report Posted February 4, 2005 Does that mean that she has to play more Canadian notes to get the same value as American ones? No. But she does if she wants to get played on the CBC. Quote
