baryshnikov Posted February 1, 2005 Report Posted February 1, 2005 Just listening to an old album of mine, Concert on the Campus, absolutely love the vibe solo on Moment In Madrid, by Cal Tjader. Especially the hidden bridge of Dearly Beloved, really drives along, no prisoners.Of course its better known for the supposed drug induced timbale solo by willie Bobo, Bobo was out of his skull, and took the audience right with him, so the notes say?His greatest solo supposedly, there were many. Cuban Fantasy definately cooks, wow? A must for all Tjader Fans, paul Quote

I play timbales myself, and think you have to be stone sober to be that much in control. Any trace of "Manteca" in your brain will impair your manual skills and slow you down. He was inspired, for sure - Bobo ranks above Tito Puente IMHO. Spinning this right now, an excellent album - even my OJC LP copy was pressed on red vinyl! Except for "Rezo" all tracks of this LP are inluded on Fantasy FCD-24771-2 Cal Tjader - Our Blues - since "Cuban Fantasy" is the only track with congas on the CD, it is a perfect introduction to Tjader as a jazz player. Both "Rezo" and "Cuban Fantasy" were also included on Fantasy LP 8079 Latino! which is on Fantasy FCD-24732-2 Cal Tjader - Latino ! together with Fantasy LP 8053 Demasiado Caliente. Quote
mikeweil Posted February 3, 2005 Report Posted February 3, 2005 BTW - comments like this are better posted in a thread specifically dedicated to the artist in question, in this case Cal Tjader Corner, too keep things concise. Quote
