jazzbo Posted January 31, 2005 Report Posted January 31, 2005 I loved seeing this movie. . . . It is quite reminiscent of "Hero" by the same director, but I didn't think it was quite as good a movie, as the storyline and the narrative weren't quite up to that high level. . . . But it was a beautiful beautiful movie. The cinematography is wonderful! I thought the "Echo Dance" was a great cinematic event! Quote
Jazzmoose Posted February 1, 2005 Report Posted February 1, 2005 Haven't seen it. Yet. This is not the kind of movie anyone could convince me to see no matter how they described it, but after seeing just one clip, I can't let myself miss it! Quote
1ngram Posted February 1, 2005 Report Posted February 1, 2005 How does it compare with Crouching Tiger? Quote
sidewinder Posted February 1, 2005 Report Posted February 1, 2005 'House of Flying Daggers'. That title sounds like most places of employment.. Quote
jazzbo Posted February 1, 2005 Author Report Posted February 1, 2005 No kidding on the employment part! The 'feel' of the cinematography and the story telling is different between the two directors, but I feel this compares favorably with Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Quote

jazzbo Posted February 1, 2005 Author Report Posted February 1, 2005 This was certainly a beautiful movie. Going to have to spring for the dvd. Quote
sal Posted February 1, 2005 Report Posted February 1, 2005 (edited) I saw it a couple weeks ago. I thought it was a mezmerizing film. Its full of heart and emotion, yet it's still fun to watch. As far as comparing it to "Hero", its hard to do that because aside from having the same director, they are completely different movies. This movie is a love story....a tragedy. "Hero" is a valentine to Chinese culture. Both are fantastic, and both are well worth watching. I really like this direction that director Zhang Yimou is moving into.....visually stunning kung fu movies with heart. I agree with jazzbo that this movie is more like Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon than "Hero" was, but still very different. That Zhang Ziyi sure is beautiful..... Edited February 1, 2005 by sal Quote
jazzbo Posted February 1, 2005 Author Report Posted February 1, 2005 And Hero too. I never used to even imagine going to see this type of movie, but Crouching Tiger made me realize what I was missing! Quote
jazzbo Posted February 1, 2005 Author Report Posted February 1, 2005 Sal, a rare flower of beauty, indeed! Quote
medjuck Posted February 1, 2005 Report Posted February 1, 2005 I agree that Flying Dagggers is a beatuful film but that the story isn't quite as strong as Hero. BTW You might want to look at Iron Monkey. Not nearly as beautiful as the other 2, but a lot of fun. Quote
jazzbo Posted February 1, 2005 Author Report Posted February 1, 2005 Thanks for the tip; I had forgotten about that movie! Quote
PHILLYQ Posted February 2, 2005 Report Posted February 2, 2005 I actually enjoyed HOFD more than Hero- the story seemed deeper and the twists and turns of who was a double agent were excellent. Gotta get this one on DVD when it comes out. The echo test scene and the bamboo tree fight scene are worth the price of admission alone, but there's also a great story too. Quote
