Sundog Posted January 29, 2005 Report Posted January 29, 2005 It seems like these two instruments have the potential to sound very good together. To be honest I can't remember ever hearing the combination. I'm sure it's been done. As a matter of fact I probably have some examples in my collection. Unfortunately I can seem to locate any. mailman Posted January 29, 2005 Report Posted January 29, 2005 Grant Green-Street Of Dreams Grant Green-Guitar Larry Young-Organ Bobby Hutcherson-Vibes Elvin Jones-Drums This is a tremendous recording. Walk don't run. Quote
bertrand Posted January 29, 2005 Report Posted January 29, 2005 Big John Patton's Let 'Em Roll (with Green, Hutch and Otis Finch) is the other 'classic' with this instrumental combination that leaps to mind. I suspect Joe Locke must have done something along those lines - I know how he did a gig at Blues Alley with Larry Goldings that I stupidly skipped, and we discussed later how rare that combination is. Soul Stream Posted January 29, 2005 Report Posted January 29, 2005 Jack McDuff..."Tough Duff"...great album with Lem Winchester on vibes. No guitar so it's a very clear sound of the two. Quote
.:.impossible Posted January 30, 2005 Report Posted January 30, 2005 I'll have to check out Tough Duff! I'd love to hear Goldings with a vibist. The other two albums are the only ones that I own. Of the two, I actually prefer Street of Dreams. All semi-obscure standards (at least to me) played fairly loosely with a less typical organ guitar approach. The Big John Patton album is good as well, but more characteristic of an organ guitar trio. Other recommendations? Quote
couw Posted January 30, 2005 Report Posted January 30, 2005 the Wild Bill Davis Americans Swinging in Paris disk features Danny Doriz on vibes. http://www.capitolmusic.de/xml/1/3251725/5396652.html Earl Bostic recorded some nice stuff with Roland Johnson on vibes and Bill Doggett on organ. Grant Green - Alive (BN) features the combination. And there are three tracks on the Billy Mitchell Verve LPR as well. Quote
king ubu Posted January 30, 2005 Report Posted January 30, 2005 Johnny Lytle? Yup! I think this one's a minor classic and should be bought before OJCs... Milt Harris is on organ, by the way. This greazy later disc includes an organist as well, if I remember right: Quote

Sundog Posted January 30, 2005 Author Report Posted January 30, 2005 Thanks to everyone who has responded so far. Apparently not a combination that happens very often. Quote
Harold_Z Posted January 30, 2005 Report Posted January 30, 2005 Look Out by Johnny Hammond Smith is another good one. Johnny Hammond is joined by vibist Clement Wells. Quote

mikeweil Posted January 30, 2005 Report Posted January 30, 2005 No, Joe hasn't done a organ/vibes record. Not quite correct - he guested on the new CD "Shifting Times" by Paradigm Shift - which is an organ trio - on nagel heyer records. Quote
mikeweil Posted January 30, 2005 Report Posted January 30, 2005 Isn' there a Johnny Hammond with Lem Winchester as well? Quote
marcello Posted January 30, 2005 Report Posted January 30, 2005 Well Mike, as you know, that recording dosn't feature Joe Locke on all tracts, so I didn't mention it. Joe Has recorded with Dr. Smith, but not a whole cd and not when Lonnie was the leader. Hell, let's those people at Palmetto a email and make the suggestion! Palmetto Records Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted January 30, 2005 Report Posted January 30, 2005 I've always wanted to do an organ/vibes record but there are no good vibe players in the area. Scratch that... there's a cat in Ann Arbor that's very good. Damn. Now I have no excuse! Quote

marcello Posted January 31, 2005 Report Posted January 31, 2005 I just tried the Hiram Bullock link and it worked fine, Mike. Do a search for him and you can come up with it with your browser of choice. Quote
