catesta Posted January 28, 2005 Report Posted January 28, 2005 A party pooper response if ever there was one. Quote
wolff Posted January 29, 2005 Report Posted January 29, 2005 For me, it's Verve then Blue Note. I could possibly live without other labels, but not these two. Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted January 29, 2005 Report Posted January 29, 2005 Apparently the detection and compresion of sarcasm doesn't occur until sometime after... well at least age 15. (How old was Cooltrane?) Did y'all chase him off, too? Haven't seen him on here in awhile. I vote for Jazzland. Quote
Soul Stream Posted January 29, 2005 Report Posted January 29, 2005 I refuse to participate as this is obviously another subversive attempt by Jazz Kat to bring the board chaos! FINE I'M SHUTTING IT DOWN!!! OBVIOUSLY SOME PEOPLE CAN'T HAVE FUN!!!1 IT TURNS OUT YOU ARE THE ONE WHO BRINGS THE BOARD TO CHAOS. You know. I'm going to say it. I always thought Jazz Kat is really Aric. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted January 29, 2005 Report Posted January 29, 2005 Hmmm... I didn't hear a British accent. Quote
Brad Posted January 29, 2005 Report Posted January 29, 2005 Since we're into mentioning a bunch of labels, how about Xanadu? They put out some great stuff some of it still not in cd. I was listening to the Frank Butler lp this morning and while not a great date by any means it's a very nice and it would be nice to see this on cd. Quote
garthsj Posted January 29, 2005 Report Posted January 29, 2005 This is an interesting, if threatening thread. For someone like me, honing my jazz tastes in the fifties, the battle was more along the lines of Contemporary, Pacific Jazz, and Verve vs. Prestige, Blue Note and Riverside, with Atlantic, Columbia, Capitol, and RCA somewhere in the middle. I loved the smaller esoteric labels like Mode, Bethlehem, Signal (God! I could retire on all of my originals if I still had them), Fantasy, and Savoy. I once owned the entire Andex catalog -- no big deal, there were only about 12 of them, and a few dogs too. I know I am leaving out many labels like Metrojazz, Mercury, Liberty, Decca, Roulette, etc ... but the battle lineup I indicated was my limited vision of the jazz world at that time ... and in far off Cape Town, many of those labels were just not available to me. I used to read about all of these great albums in Metronome and Downbeat and feel sick with desire to own them. Ordering albums directly from the U.S. was very difficult at that time, and incredibly expensive. Two 12" albums took most of my 15 year-old allowance! I once spent my tennis lesson money on buying the latest Buddy DeFranco album, and I had to fake going to lessons for a month .... tennis anyone?!! Quote

Jazz Kat Posted January 31, 2005 Author Report Posted January 31, 2005 Some of the A&M catalogue is quite good. Quote
