JohnT Posted October 11, 2006 Report Posted October 11, 2006 One of the bands I play with patterns itself after the Red Norvo Trio - Vibes, Guitar and Bass. You can check us out at: www.myspace.com/alsecenjazztrio Of course, we also "borrowed" from Charles Mingus for the title of our demo CD!!! Quote
alocispepraluger102 Posted October 14, 2006 Report Posted October 14, 2006 one of my capitol classic volumes has sides by stan hasselgard allstar 6 and the red norvo septet, including dexter, guiffre, reds callendar and norvo, jack mills, ray linn, and barney of kessel from 1947. Quote
mikeweil Posted October 14, 2006 Report Posted October 14, 2006 These tracks are excellent but sound surprisingly muffled on the Mosaic. I have a German 1970's EMI pressing that sounds much more brilliant and dynamic. Quote

Late Posted October 14, 2006 Report Posted October 14, 2006 This one remains my favorite Norvo. The Classics label is always enjoyable (if not always sonically up to par with Hep, Frog, etc.), and this disc has Betty Boop on it — literally! Quote
jazzbo Posted October 14, 2006 Report Posted October 14, 2006 Not my favorite Norvo. My favorite Norvo cover! I really found the Bailey Mosaic to have some exceptional Red Norvo band sides! Quote
LAL Posted October 16, 2006 Report Posted October 16, 2006 Can anyone recommend these later recordings by Red ("Famous Door" series)? Quote
mjazzg Posted October 31, 2016 Report Posted October 31, 2016 Bumping this as I recently purchased "Music To Listen To Red Norvo By" on a whim and I'm thoroughly enjoying it. Much of the discussion on this thread until now seems to have been about his earlier recordings.  I'm interested in any recommendations or thoughts about  recordings about the time of "Music To Listen..." . I'm wondering about "Ad Lib" with Buddy Colette and The RCA Victors "In Hi Fi", "Plays The Blues" or any other sideman dates of a similar feel to "Music To Listen..." I'll definitely check out the Farlow/Mingus thanks in anticipation Quote
Big Beat Steve Posted October 31, 2016 Report Posted October 31, 2016 I'd consider myself quite a Red Norvo fan (and have a huge part of his 40s and 50s recordings) so I may be a bit biased about recommendations but two recordings that I particularly like from this period are these: - Vibe-Rations (Liberty LJH 6012) and - The Forward Look (Reference Recordings RR-8, a privately taped session from New Year's Eve, 1957, that was first issued on LP in the early 80s) Quote

Peter Friedman Posted October 31, 2016 Report Posted October 31, 2016 Here are 3 Red Norvo CDs I enjoy. Quote

duaneiac Posted November 1, 2016 Report Posted November 1, 2016 Some other worthy discs: I'm not sure if the following ever made it to CD: And if you want to hear Red Norvo's group accompanying a popular singer of the day: Quote

Excellent musicianship, too. A well -rehearsed, tight band. Quote

I'm intrigued by the Sinatra date (might get that one played whilst the family are about). I'm going to be Norvo busy I can see Quote
mikeweil Posted November 1, 2016 Report Posted November 1, 2016 I ordered a copy of the Sinatra with Norvo after reading about it earlier today! Quote
Peter Friedman Posted November 2, 2016 Report Posted November 2, 2016 More Red Norvo here along with some good playing by Tal Fallow, Barney Kessel, & Ruby Braff. Quote
