Dan Gould Posted January 27, 2005 Report Posted January 27, 2005 well, not exactly, Dan , as you managed to throw in a jab at me related to a post in an entirely different thread; Yanow knows a little bit but not enough, is shallow in his historical analysis, and takes such a generalist approach to jazz history as to make his books virtually worthless. Just my opinion. How is pointing out that you and he agree about LD's late-60s Blue Note albums are bad a "jab"? I was saying, "look, he agrees with you about LD, so what's so bad about his influence?" Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted January 27, 2005 Report Posted January 27, 2005 (edited) Again... Guys, let's not stink up another thread with this stuff. Take it outside!! Edited January 27, 2005 by Rooster_Ties Quote

AllenLowe Posted January 27, 2005 Report Posted January 27, 2005 "Take it outside!! " well, it's a little too cold where I live to do this today - and thanks for your support, Chris - let's just let it ride - Quote
MartyJazz Posted January 27, 2005 Report Posted January 27, 2005 Uh, moving on. "Most influential jazz writers today"? Obviously the words "influential" and "stimulating" are not synonymous. Among those I find stimulating, Ted Gioia (e.g., "Jazz: The Imperfect Art") and Francis Davis (his most recent, "Like Young") are two who come immediately to mind. Quote
couw Posted January 27, 2005 Report Posted January 27, 2005 ... Francis Davis ... speaking of whom: Old School. Stumbled on it, but haven't read it yet. Quote
catesta Posted January 27, 2005 Report Posted January 27, 2005 I'll back anything he says. And he's been around pretty damn long. Careful. Quote
Jazz Kat Posted January 27, 2005 Report Posted January 27, 2005 I didn't say she knew anything about jazz, only that if you got on her show, you will sell a lot of CDs B-) . Just like her "book club." I believe her taste runs to smooth jazz Yes. I believe she has commented on how she loved Chris Botti's new album. Quote

And I think Francis Davis if now the jazz columnist for the Vilage Voice. I think that's a venue that also gives you influence. Quote

Leeway Posted January 27, 2005 Report Posted January 27, 2005 Wouldn't it be fun to see someone like Jason Moran or Dave Holland on Oprah? Who knows what might happen Quote
7/4 Posted January 27, 2005 Report Posted January 27, 2005 Wouldn't it be fun to see someone like Jason Moran or Dave Holland on Oprah? Who knows what might happen She should have Dave's band on her show. Sell some fucking albums. Quote
Jazz Kat Posted January 28, 2005 Report Posted January 28, 2005 How many thought Dave Koz's new album, Saxophonic was pitiful. I wouldn't of bought it any how, but I got it as a gift. Spinned it, hated it. Quote
Jazzmoose Posted January 28, 2005 Report Posted January 28, 2005 Damn, Jazz Kat...I've got a pretty gruff personality sometime, and I've never pissed off anyone to the point that they'd give me a Dave Koz album... Quote
clifford_thornton Posted February 2, 2005 Report Posted February 2, 2005 Hentoff, Giddins, Corbett (sometimes, when he's not being hoity-toity), and Whitehead's pretty good. Quote
