Jazz Kat Posted January 26, 2005 Report Posted January 26, 2005 (edited) What would you say is your least favorite albums issued on Blue Note, circa 1955-1968? I'm curious to see what we can come up with.... Edited January 27, 2005 by Jazz Kat Quote

Jazz Kat Posted January 26, 2005 Author Report Posted January 26, 2005 Hot Dog - Lou Donaldson, July 17, 2004 Reviewer: James Morefield (Philadelphia, PA USA) - See all my reviews I am truly surprised this isn't considered one of the finest Lou Donaldson organ funk recordings let alone one of the great examples of its overall genre. I find the playing on Hot Dog to be rife with extremely catchy rythms and tight, groovy solos. The last two songs, the title track and the cover of "It's Your Thing", are flat out wonderful. Lou's horn is great but, to me, is overshadowed by the fine combination of Reuben Wilson on organ and Melvin Sparks on guitar. Similar to the symmetry they display on Rueben's own "Blue Mode" they really cook up something special here, and I have found this to be my personal favorite amidst a growing collection of 60's and 70's jazz/funk/soul. I didn't necessarily consider this to be an 'underrated' work until searching through the reviews on these pages and seeing little mention of it on favorite's lists. Was this review helpful to you? scottb Posted January 26, 2005 Report Posted January 26, 2005 Reuben Wilson on organ my copy says Charles Earland on organ Quote
Guy Berger Posted January 26, 2005 Report Posted January 26, 2005 The worst I've heard is Am I Blue (Grant Green), but I don't have anything approximating a comprehensive collection. Guy Quote
Jazz Kat Posted January 26, 2005 Author Report Posted January 26, 2005 Did you have a lot of cofee or something? Quote
Jazz Kat Posted January 26, 2005 Author Report Posted January 26, 2005 I meant the guy who dissed The Three Sounds. Never diss The Three Sounds! Quote
BruceH Posted January 26, 2005 Report Posted January 26, 2005 Slow Drag---Donald Byrd? Just off the top of my head; I'm sure there are worse. Quote
Jazz Kat Posted January 26, 2005 Author Report Posted January 26, 2005 How about the Donald Byrd with voices lp. You like that one? I don't really get that album. Quote
Johnny E Posted January 26, 2005 Report Posted January 26, 2005 I meant the guy who dissed The Three Sounds. Never diss The Three Sounds! Sorry, I simply hate the Three Sounds. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted January 26, 2005 Report Posted January 26, 2005 Tip for Jazz Kat: Do not ask a question, then insult the results. This is early teen stuff. Quote
Jazz Kat Posted January 26, 2005 Author Report Posted January 26, 2005 How can you hate TTS. They're so fresh! Quote
Leeway Posted January 26, 2005 Report Posted January 26, 2005 How can you hate TTS. They're so fresh! They are what's worse than bad, namely, mediocre. B-) Quote
Soul Stream Posted January 26, 2005 Report Posted January 26, 2005 Wow, this "worst of" is basically my "best of" list...HOT DOG, SLOW DRAG...hmmm those are always in heavy rotation at my house. I don't think Blue Note made any "dog" records. Some I don't "get" (Herbie Hancock "The Prisoner"), but alot of times I'm just not "there" yet. I hate to see stuff like Hot Dog or I Want To Hold Your or Am I Blue get the thumbs way down. Sometimes I think it's an negative organ bias. Those are organ classics. Quote

wolff Posted January 26, 2005 Report Posted January 26, 2005 If I had to give you one BN from my collection, I'd give you Frederick Roach's "All That's Good". Quote
Big Al Posted January 26, 2005 Report Posted January 26, 2005 Unit Structures My opinion only! Fire away! Quote
wolff Posted January 26, 2005 Report Posted January 26, 2005 I'll trade "All that's Good" for Elder Don or Unit Structures. Quote
GA Russell Posted January 26, 2005 Report Posted January 26, 2005 I see a lot of votes for Grant Green! Of course, he was on a lot of albums. I'm not happy with Jimmy Smith's first album, called A New Star A New Sound. He didn't have the hip stops down yet, and compared to his later work it's disappointing. Quote
scottb Posted January 26, 2005 Report Posted January 26, 2005 (edited) I'm going with Kat on this one. Byrd's A NEW PERSPECTIVE. I've personally never gotten through the whole thing. Edited January 26, 2005 by scottb Quote
