Leeway
I was playing the "Blue Note Gems of Jazz" LP. There is one track on it by James Moody and His Modernists, "Tin Tin Deo," with Chano Pozo. I checked a James Moody discography site, Moody Discog and here's the session details: *** Year: 1948 *** Label: Blue Note BLP-5006 *** Performer: JAMES MOODY *** Album: James Moody and His Modernists *** Date: 18 & 25 Oct, 1948 *** Reedition: *** Songs: 1.Fuller Bop Man, 2. Workshop, 3.Oh Henry, 4. Moodamorphosis, 5.Tropicana, 6. Cu-ba, 7. Moody's All Frantic, 8 .Tin Tin Deo *** Musicians: Gil Fuller: Arranger, Ernie Henry: (as), James Moody: (ts), Cecil Payne: Sax (Baritone), Dave Burns: Trumpet, Chano Pozo: Bongos, Vocals, Art Blakey: Drums, Nelson Boyd: Bass, James ‘Mtume’ Forman: Piano, Teddy Stewart: Drums, Elmon Wright: Trumpet *** Available at: Tower I've checked Tower (as noted in the discog) and other usual record sources but can't locate this on CD. Question: was it ever issued on CD? If so, anyone know of its availability? Here's a picture of the album:
Spontooneous
The CD was called "New Sounds," catalog number 84436. Probably OOP, of course. The CD also had the first Art Blakey's Messengers session. (P.S.: "James ‘Mtume’ Forman," yeah, right!) Leeway
Thanks! It seems Amazon has some copies. Edit: On closer inspection, the track listing given doesn't match up with the discog info. Plus the Amazon listing is for a Capitol release. OTOH, it does list Moody and Blakey as the artists on the album. So I'm confused. Was this a Blue Note release on CD? garthsj
Remember that Blue Note is a trademark of Capitol records (EMI), and is sometimes listed as "released by Capitol Records". The number is CDP 7 84436 2. It was released in 1991, and has been OOP for quite a long while. Grab one while you can. Here is the cover of the CD ... it is an essential album... I "grabbed one" from a fellow Org member off the "Offering and Looking For" topic just a few months ago.
Leeway
Thanks all for the information BTW, I really dug Pozo's playing and vocal on Tin Tin Deo. Certainly an interesting character from the bop days.
Bill Fenohr
Just from a trivia standpoint that New Sounds cover is a redesign of the original 5010 10" cover and there are only two songs, The Thin Man and Bop Alley on the cd that were on the 10" that used that cover. The original cover was the same design, but the names were: Max Roach James Moody Kenny Dorham Art Blakey There were three songs by a group led by Roach and one tune by Moody that were leased from French Vogue plus the two i mentioned above. JSngry
Ya' know, I dig the Reid Miles look, wouldn't trade it for anything in the world, especially as "represenative" of Blue Note, but DAMN that's one coolass cover! Even if that tenor would probably be unplayable...
Leeway
There are quite a few cool covers in those early Blue Notes - perhaps un/underappreciated because of the focus on both Reid Miles work and the music of the hard bop and later era. I love the energy and freshness and even rawness of those earlier recordings. Anyway, does anyone know who the artist was for the Moody (and possibly other) cover designs on these early BNs? brownie
Anyway, does anyone know who the artist was for the Moody (and possibly other) cover designs on these early BNs? John Hermansader designed this one. He took care ofr the design of quite a number of the covers BN ten-inchers in the fifties!
JSngry
No mention whatsoever on the Blakey/Moody CD reissue of who did the art for that one. I know(?) that Gil Melle did some early 50s covers for the label (and for Prestige too, right?), and that Blakey/Moody thing looks like it could be one of his, but as for that red Moody thing (geez, that sounds like a vintage C&W act - Red Moody), I don't think so. Are you aware of this Chano Pozo box: http://www.fnac.com/Shelf/article.asp?PRID...OriginClick=yes suggest you check that 3CD box. Maybe hard to find by now but worth the search. A very comprehensive box, it includes four of the James Moody BN tracks. You can listen to samples from the box on the link. The box comes with a very documented 146-page booklet in Spanish (with full english translation!).
