EKE BBB Posted January 18, 2005 Report Posted January 18, 2005 I´ve planned to pick a few FSR releases on their special sale € 6.37 (USD 7.57). Seen this Coleman Hawkins CD and as I don´t have access to my database or my Lord CD-ROM now, I don´t know which date(s) it´s taken from, and if this is available elsewhere. Thanks in advance! Timeless Jazz Coleman Hawkins Featuring: Coleman Hawkins (ts), Billy Taylor (p), Emmett Berry (tp), Eddie Bert (tb), Jo Jones (d), Milt Hinton (b) REFERENCE: FSRCD 088 Tracklisting: 1. Get Happy (Arlen-Koehler) 2. If I Had You (Shapiro-Campbell-Connelly) 3. Lullaby of Birdland (Shearing-Werss) 4. Out of Nowhere (Green-Heyman) 5. Blue Love (Sampson-Mills) 6. brownie Posted January 18, 2005 Report Posted January 18, 2005 EKE, these are the sides Hawkins and his men recorded for the Jazztone label on November 8, 1954. Missing from the reissue are 'Honeysuckle Rose', 'Undecided' and 'Time On My Hands'. And it's 'Blue Lou' (not Blue Love) of course. The session was previously reissued on Xanadu as 'Jazz Tones'. 'Time on my Hands' is listed as missing from that reissue. Quote
EKE BBB Posted January 18, 2005 Author Report Posted January 18, 2005 Thanks, brownie. I think I´ll pass on that one, as the very same FSR has released this year "The complete Jazztone recordings 1954" (FSR 347) with the complete session. Quote
king ubu Posted January 18, 2005 Report Posted January 18, 2005 Thanks, brownie. I think I´ll pass on that one, as the very same FSR has released this year "The complete Jazztone recordings 1954" (FSR 347) with the complete session. These guys are crazy! They even use the same cover photo! What do they think? Quote
brownie Posted January 18, 2005 Report Posted January 18, 2005 At the very least, they keep the catalogue alive! Quote
king ubu Posted January 18, 2005 Report Posted January 18, 2005 At the very least, they keep the catalogue alive! That I can't deny! Probably not enough '54 material around, so they're taking a second go before proceeding to the '55 stuff? Quote

Probably not enough '54 material around, so they're taking a second go before proceeding to the '55 stuff? Beg to disagree, your Royal Highness! I think Fresh Sounds has acquired the rights to those Jazztones. I hope they also reissue that superb Lionel Hampton session on Jazztone (with Lucky Thompson, Jimmy Cleveland, Oscar Dennard, Oscar Pettiford) and make sense of that session which has never been released complete. All the better if they have! And yes, please, they really ought to reissue the Hampton session! The old and beat up LP with parts of that session that I've heard is fantastic! Quote
Leeway Posted January 19, 2005 Report Posted January 19, 2005 FWIW, several of the reviewers/critics in the January 2005 issue of "Cadence" listed the "Complete Jazztone..." among the best reissues of the year. Quote
jazzbo Posted January 19, 2005 Report Posted January 19, 2005 Sheesh! The Prevue cd sounds better to me and has the same material . . . was out years ago! Quote
Spontooneous Posted January 19, 2005 Report Posted January 19, 2005 Am I alone in disliking Emmett Berry's contributions? His tone and delivery bug me in ways that no other trumpeter of the time bugs me. Are my ears on wrong here? Perspective, anyone? Quote
