riverrat Posted January 16, 2005 Report Posted January 16, 2005 Can anyone provide a complete list of the Blue Note TOCJ 1600 series? I have Mobley's Curtain Call, Lee Morgan The Rajah and Herbie Nichols Trio Vol. 2 which are all very worthy sessions. I'm wondering what other obscurities in the 1600 series I am missing out on. Late Posted January 17, 2005 Report Posted January 17, 2005 (edited) Toshiba TOCJ 1621 – Various – A Head Like That Who's on this one? Seems strange that the Japanese haven't re-reissued some of these since their first appearance around 1997. I only have two, but they're nice indeed. Edited January 17, 2005 by Late Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted January 17, 2005 Report Posted January 17, 2005 Cuscuna/Ruppli 2 says: Alphonse Mouzon; Bobby Hutcherson; McCoy Tyner; Chico Hamilton; Jean-Luc Ponty; Eddie Henderson; Jack McDuff; Ronnie Foster; Gene Harris; Bobbi Humphrey; Freddie Hubbard; Donald Byrd. Mike Quote
riverrat Posted January 17, 2005 Author Report Posted January 17, 2005 Thanks for the list. I have "Taru" the Bennie Green and the Spanish Blue Note of "Poppin" also. What does "Blue Trail" sound like? What is the story on that one? Quote
couw Posted January 17, 2005 Report Posted January 17, 2005 Blue Trails: The Rare Tracks (TOCJ 1601) collects various alternate takes and other things left off of the TOCJ reissues of the 1500/1600 series. In the meantime most of these tracks have been released domestically on the "appropriate" albums. It's a nice disk, but it has nothing to do with John Coltrane, apart from having an alternate of Blue Train and a more generously cropped version of the pic of Trane with the lollipop (cf. Blue Train) as its cover. link Quote
Son-of-a-Weizen Posted January 17, 2005 Report Posted January 17, 2005 Just think, if only they'd gone and slapped 'One for Five' on 'Blue Trails' it wouldn't be necessary for folks to waste...er, spend their money on the Bossa Nova Bacchanal RVG for that one splendid track. Quote

Son-of-a-Weizen Posted January 17, 2005 Report Posted January 17, 2005 That soitenly woiks too! Quote
Late Posted January 21, 2005 Report Posted January 21, 2005 Blue Trails: The Rare Tracks (TOCJ 1601) link This is currently available at Tower Online for $15.99. Seems like a relatively fair price. Quote
riverrat Posted October 30, 2005 Author Report Posted October 30, 2005 Toshiba TOCJ 1610 – Jimmy Smith – Jimmy Smith Trio + LD Crap! Anyone got a spare copy of this one sitting around? ← AMG sure gives this one a lukewarm review. 2.5 stars: "Theoretically, the pairing of Jimmy Smith and Lou Donaldson is a smart idea. Both musicians were instrumental in the development of soul-jazz and were recognized as among the leaders of their genre. Instead of catching fire, however, Jimmy Smith Trio + LD, falls flat. There are a few moments that fulfill the duo's potential -- both Smith and Donaldson trade hot lines on "Star Eyes" -- but in general, the session is bland but pleasant offering nothing truly memorable." What do the Jimmy Smith fans here have to say? Quote
CJ Shearn Posted October 31, 2005 Report Posted October 31, 2005 I have "Cherokee" but would love Jimmy Smith Trio+LD and Lonesome Road. Quote

andybleaden Posted November 1, 2005 Report Posted November 1, 2005 I nabbed em when they came out and they were worth it. Not the best Jimmy Smith I admit but certainly not the worst I did like Lonesome Road however I have got over the stamp collecting of Blue Note Jimmy Smith when I sold my Plays Fats Waller LP and never bothered with the cd from Japan Now THAT is will power Andy -_- Quote
andybleaden Posted November 1, 2005 Report Posted November 1, 2005 I also tried to get the 70's ( ahead like that or what ever it was) sampler and then remembered that I had most if not all of the tracks so left it til now...now I think maybe I made the wrong choice but Mr Will power will have to succeed as I am skint. I thought this was a real nice little series and wished they could do more Andy Quote
Late Posted April 21, 2008 Report Posted April 21, 2008 Hiroshi Tanno currently has some of these in stock. TOCJ 1611 (Hank Mobley's Curtain Call) is 3000¥ however ... Quote

Why not look for "The Lost Sessions" instead? So this then is the only surviving track from the 1965 session with Tyner, Hubbard & Higgins. Have you ever heard what happened to the rest of the session tapes? A fire? ...erased? ....labeled 'Lost' because they're weak? other? Quote
