Guest ariceffron Posted January 16, 2005 Report Posted January 16, 2005 this dude was scatting (and rhyming) the names of every bass player in jazz. he was all: theres gary peacock and ron carter, wilbur ware and isreal crosby etc but it all rhymed. it made me sick Quote
JSngry Posted January 16, 2005 Report Posted January 16, 2005 (edited) Who was it by? I usually hate that "I'm so hip I know all the names" type stuff myself. Almost always it's done by the lamest mfs out there. BLECH! Edited January 16, 2005 by JSngry Quote
brownie Posted January 16, 2005 Report Posted January 16, 2005 Ben Sidran did a song like that! 'Piano Players' that included the names of a lot of the great piano players. That was on his Antilles album 'Old Songs for the New Depression'! Quote
AllenLowe Posted January 16, 2005 Report Posted January 16, 2005 I don't know - to me the worst jazz song is anything written by Leonard Feather - if you don't believe me ask Chris Albertson - Quote
Jazz Kat Posted January 16, 2005 Report Posted January 16, 2005 How can any real jazz song be bad? Unless it's some lame dude crossing over from pop, o rlike you said, hip hop. I hate it when these pop singers try and scat jazz. It's like, obby dooby, scooby do bop. I'm like what the hell? What's that supposed to mean. Quote
Larry Kart Posted January 16, 2005 Report Posted January 16, 2005 Of jazz songs that anybody actually played, I've always been unable to take "Lullaby of Birdland." I know it's just a variant on "Love Me or Leave Me," but the line is so naggingly insistent and jingle-like that I can't imagine how hard it would be as a player to get it out of the way and keep it there. Dennis_M Posted January 16, 2005 Report Posted January 16, 2005 How can any real jazz song be bad? I would imagine that there are plenty of people capable of writing bad music in any genre you can think of. Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted January 16, 2005 Report Posted January 16, 2005 How can any real jazz song be bad? What constitutes "real" jazz? Quote
Jazz Kat Posted January 16, 2005 Report Posted January 16, 2005 Well I meant that statement to be a part of my whole post, but since you are taking it out of my post, well I meant, that, if a jazz musician wrote a song, and it swung and it grooved, it's all right. I might like other songs better thatn that one, but I mean I can take it. But if some pop or R&B musician does a song and calls it, "jazz" I probaly will not be too fond of it. Quote

SGUD missile Posted January 16, 2005 Report Posted January 16, 2005 Actually, Nashville bassist/ jazz singer Jim Ferguson wrote a tune called " Not just another pretty Bass" that was quite clever in a Dave Frishbergish way .. ( also heard on KPLU ) Quote
Sundog Posted January 16, 2005 Report Posted January 16, 2005 But if some pop or R&B musician does a song and calls it, "jazz" I probaly will not be too fond of it. Then you probably won't. But have you ever heard Maceo Parker do Better Get Hit In Yo' Soul? Quote

P.D. Posted January 16, 2005 Report Posted January 16, 2005 (edited) As far as Jazz ( i. e. REAL Jazz) goes Haint it It Taint Watcha Do It's the Way that You Do It.... That being said.. I still hate, Cute, Rosetta and Blue Lou for no logical reason, I just cringe at those three tunes. Edited January 16, 2005 by P.D. Quote

On the contrary I like the song so much (and I don't like "Love Me Or Leave Me" that much) as well as I like its author, George Shearing! But, speaking of tastes... not wise thing to do Quote
DrJ Posted January 16, 2005 Report Posted January 16, 2005 Somewhat on topic - I've always thought he song "Too Close for Comfort" was incredibly banal, taken on its own terms. It's remarkable any jazz artist can do much with it, yet you get someone like Art Pepper and he turns it into magic. A gift. Quote
Jazz Kat Posted January 17, 2005 Report Posted January 17, 2005 Well, if I hear an instrumental version of a song say, Makin' Whoopie, I'll love it. Then when I hear the lyrics, I just dont like the lyrics at all. Quote
JSngry Posted January 17, 2005 Report Posted January 17, 2005 You should hear Ray Charles sing it. Quote
Brownian Motion Posted January 17, 2005 Report Posted January 17, 2005 I don't know - to me the worst jazz song is anything written by Leonard Feather - if you don't believe me ask Chris Albertson - Leonard and his ersatz blues lyrics--very annoying. But not as annoying as his piano playing--how many sessions Leonard organized did he ruin with his clunky, inert approach to the keyboard? Quote
JSngry Posted January 17, 2005 Report Posted January 17, 2005 That bad? Noooooooooooo........... That GOOD. Quote
Jazz Kat Posted January 17, 2005 Report Posted January 17, 2005 o I guess I took it the wrong way. My bad. Quote
