Dan Gould Posted January 15, 2005 Report Posted January 15, 2005 Thanks for the update. The Eric Alexander looks like a winner, and I have the first Philadelphians disc and its quite nice; a Volume 2 is a welcome sight! Quote
John Tapscott Posted January 15, 2005 Report Posted January 15, 2005 Grant Stewart is a new name to me. A reed player, I presume. Anyone have any more info on Mr. Strewart? He must be a high level player to be on this kind of date. Quote
robviti Posted January 16, 2005 Report Posted January 16, 2005 stewart has a regular tuesday gig at fat cat in nyc. although i've never had the pleasure of seeing him live, i do like his criss cross recording more urban tones and his work on ryan kisor's awakening on the same label. thanks to this thread, i also have an artist to explore: david binney. with 9 leader dates to his credit and many more recorded appearances under his belt, i have to wonder where i've been to not have heard him before. montg Posted January 16, 2005 Author Report Posted January 16, 2005 The Orrin Evans is probably the one I'm most interested in from this group. I've only have heard him as a sideman on a few CDs (Ralph Peterson and Bobby Watson), and I've been meaning to try something from his as a leader. Apparently his stint at Palmetto is going to be a short one--one album. Quote
Larry Kart Posted January 16, 2005 Report Posted January 16, 2005 I'm curious about the Binney album, in part because of the presence of pianist Jacob Sacks. I've heard him as a sideman on two albums by talented Swiss trombonist/composer Christophe Schweizer (one with Binney in the front line, the other with altoist Eric Rasmussen -- one of those two is still to be released, I think), and Sacks seemed to be special. Also, one of those albums included Dan Weiss, who struck me as special too. Quote

cannonball-addict Posted January 19, 2005 Report Posted January 19, 2005 (edited) Binney is a very creative intruiging musician. He co-led an electric jazz group called Lost Tribe in the early 90s along with Ben Perowsky, Adam Rogers, David Gilmore, and Fima Ephron. His recent release "South" was on the ACT label which is in the process of building a reputation with a small catalog of exclusively name musicians as sidemen. ACT recently did one album grouping up Greg Osby, Jimmy Haslip, Adam Rogers and Teri Lynne Carrington. I think the label is called ACT. It looked to be German. But I dunno Binney is a major downtown NY cat to check out! Edited January 19, 2005 by cannonball-addict Quote
robviti Posted January 19, 2005 Report Posted January 19, 2005 (edited) FYI, the German ACT label was founded in 1992 by Siegfried Loch, former president of Liberty/United Artist Germany (1966-70), WEA Germany (1971-81), and WEA (Warner) Europe (1982-89). Here's a link to their website: ACT Edited January 19, 2005 by jazzshrink Quote
