Alon Marcus Posted October 29, 2005 Author Report Posted October 29, 2005 I'm happy to tell all the people around here that I finally discovered the exact definition of "jazz". Now I know what this is all about... Jazz Quote
slide_advantage_redoux Posted October 30, 2005 Report Posted October 30, 2005 (edited) Asked of me at a jazz camp by a kid in beginning improv: "Can you explain the Maxilydian scale to me again please?" Then there was the kid at the U of North Texas who was told to transcribe a Bird solo. He came back the following week with one transcribed....unfortunately it was the wrong Bird; It was a Charlie Byrd solo. Heard asked of a trombone player by a very young kid: "How do you swallow that thing??" (I suppose he thought it was a sword swallowing thing) Edited October 31, 2005 by Greg Waits Quote
rostasi Posted October 30, 2005 Report Posted October 30, 2005 I was expecting a mockingbird (which, by the way, can be very hard to transcribe). Quote
Rosco Posted October 31, 2005 Report Posted October 31, 2005 Overheard in a record store a few years back... "Yeah, I'm after some jazz... played on acoustic guitar. With kind of a reggae beat." The guy behind the counter just looked at him blankly. I often wonder if he ever found anything. Quote

slide_advantage_redoux Posted November 1, 2005 Report Posted November 1, 2005 While working part time at the now-deceased music chain Mars Music, I once was asked by a high school kid "Uhh, do you have any Bach Stravinsky Trumpets in stock?" I almost hated to have to correct him, and keeping from out and out laughing in his face was the real challenge. Quote

Rooster_Ties Posted November 1, 2005 Report Posted November 1, 2005 Another strange but true request heard at a record store (a buddy of mine worked there)... Do you have any CD's with a recording of Blue Suede Shoes, played on solo organ – and played kinda somber? It's for a funeral. What section would that be in? Quote

JSngry Posted November 1, 2005 Report Posted November 1, 2005 The Bob Ralston renaisance is just around the corner. Be prepared to catch the wave. Quote
Brownian Motion Posted November 3, 2005 Report Posted November 3, 2005 This place is a drag. What jazz board do the wits migrate to? Quote
